I haven't seen this posted . Gov Romney of Mass signed a bill permanently banning assault weapons .He did this on July third. It is an old political trick to pass unpopular bills or give unhappy news on the friday before 4th of july weekend.

My condolences.

Whenever your state government holds you in contempt, it's time to change it if you can, or leave.

From the GOAL site...

As our members know, S.2367 did not ban a single gun because the Massachusetts “assault weapons†law, unfortunately, does not expire with the federal law. The bill signed by the Governor actually protects Massachusetts gun owners with a permanent reference to federal definitions that provide them with a list of exempt firearms that numbers nearly 700.

With all of this in mind, GOAL is urging its members to contact Governor Mitt Romney and Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey and express their outrage with their betrayal of gun owners in Massachusetts.

I personally am VERY happy about the MA bill. Nothing I can currently do about the MA ban, but getting more things approved is a step in the right direction.

Small victories.

Ok, so which weapons are on the list as NOT being assault weapons? M14s, ARs, AKs?

And if they are NOT classified as assault weapons, than does that mean post fed ban that these will be available in MA with all "evil features"?

Firearm Reform Bill Signed

Romney Takes Opportunity to Betray Gun Owners

On July 1, 2004 , Governor Mitt Romney signed into law one of the greatest of reforms to Massachusetts gun laws in recent history. In what should have been a day of celebration for GOAL and its members, the Romney administration took a major shot at lawful gun owners and showed their true colors.

GOAL Director of Legislative Affairs Jim Wallace was invited to attend a ceremonial bill signing at 10:30 AM Thursday in the state house press room. Several of the reform bill’s supporters and the entire state house press corps were at the gathering.

In a move that shocked many in the room, Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey began the ceremony by hailing this bill as “…an important victory against crime.†The Lieutenant Governor went on to say, “The most important job of state government is ensuring public safety. Governor Romney and I are determined to do whatever it takes to stop the flood of dangerous weapons into our cities and towns and to make Massachusetts safer for law-abiding citizens.â€

After the Lieutenant Governor’s shocking and insulting comments, she then gave John Rosenthal, of Stop Handgun Violence, an opportunity to address the press corps. Of course, Mr. Rosenthal took the opportunity to put his spin on the bill as “gun safety legislation.†During his remarks he stated. “We’re not taking guns away from anyone except assault weapons and cheaply made Saturday Night Specials.†Romney officials also gave Mr. Rosenthal an entire paragraph in their official press release, while GOAL was not even mentioned.

After the “stage†had been set, Senator Stephen Brewer and Representative George Peterson were allowed to say a few words. These longtime friends of gun owners spoke on the importance of the reforms the bill made. “This change will go a long way toward fixing the flaws created by the 1998 law,†said Representative George Peterson.

Governor Romney then took the podium to make a few remarks before signing the bill. Although the Governor did make mention of being a “sportsman†and the reforms in the bill that would help other sportsmen, he spun the bill as a ban.

“Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts ,†Romney said. “These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.â€

When asked by a reporter if he supported the renewal of the federal “assault weapons†ban and if he had spoken to the senators about it, Governor Romney replied that it was not really his job to lobby on federal legislation, but that he shared Senator Kerry’s and Senator Kennedy’s position on the issue!

At no time during the ceremony was the GOAL representative asked to speak and set the record straight on what the bill actually did, nor was GOAL even mentioned in the Governor’s press release. GOAL and its members can only take this display as a complete insult to the lawful gun owners and the hard work that went into making reforms happen.

All gun owners should realize that this bill is an enormous victory, but we can not let this insulting spin by the Governor go unchecked. As a reminder, below is a summary of what the bill really does.

The bill:

Changes the size of an FID card and LTC to a more manageable size;

Adds a 90 day grace period for both licenses and cards;

Requires police to give a receipt for confiscated firearms;

License and cards issued after September 28 will be valid for six years;

Creates a seven person board to review the cases of persons denied licenses and cards due to old misdemeanor convictions; and

Protects nearly 700 guns from being declared "assault weapons."

“These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.â€

Gov Romney is correct...they're made for hunting and killing people...like the politicians who continue to nibble away our rights little by little. And that's exactly the way the Framers intended it to be.

The banned items are the same ones that are banned now pending the 9/13 sunset.

Of course it pisses me off that my SAR-1 cannot have a bayonet lug, etc. but that is not going to affect functionality anyways.

So, am I not going to be able to get 15 round Magazins in September now? :confused:

"The banned items are the same ones that are banned now pending the 9/13 sunset".

Ok, is there a published list of these items that are banned, or..is there a list of the 700 MA items not banned???

“These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.â€

Well, guns are instuments of destuction, but who is to say, "These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense?"

I wouldn't go so far as saying these weapons are for "hunting down and killing people."
The anti groups have stated that far too often.

That aforementioned statement comes from fear and ignorance, propagated by the media, whose only interest is ...RATINGS!

Unless one of us RKBA people helps protect their ass, from those that DO NOT care what the laws states, I guess the antis just won't understand, despite what they see on TV news every night.

Maybe they feel.."it won't happen to them."
Let's face it, the agitprop has become the tool of the film maker, author, editor, etc.... Michael Moore comes to mind as a user of this tool!
As long as those who fear guns solicit the minds of the uninformed, we are in a quest to insure our 2A right.
Of course, I could be just another..."Gun Fanatic."

I'd be remiss in my obligation as an American citizen, to follow the precepts of the constitution, which so many %$&%*& holes seem to beleive does not apply to them.
But, then again, what the %^$%&^% do I know?

I know this....
I will never become "just another brick in the wall."
Thanks for listening..

If I remember correctly, Massachusetts limits magazines to 9 rounds with no grandfathering of old magazines. New York, on the other hand, has a state law that mirrors the federal law, but without the sunset provision. Once new regular-capacity magazines become widespread, it will be nearly impossible to enforce the New York state ban.

Bill, I was just down in a gunstore in Lowell, MA today and they were selling pre-ban Mini-14/Mini-30/SKS/AR/AK/HK, etc and pistol mags, and I haven't seen anything about the no-grandfathering clause, or the 9 round capacity....but I could be wrong.

he is a Republican, they support RKBA
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha :) That's a good one. :)Hey, did you hear the one about the priest, rabbi, and atheist who walked into a bar?

If you have a Class A License, you can buy Full-Capacity Mags now, and you will still be able to buy them next year.
If you don't have a Class A License you can't buy them now, nor can you next year.
Nothing has changed there.

Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts ," Romney said. "These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people."

hmm used for hunting you say? thought hunting was a sport?

if it can be used to hunt down the common bipeds why can it not be used to hunt down quadraped furry woodland creatures?

some silly people. :rolleyes:

Is it any wonder why us Mainers smartened up and split from @ssachewsucks in 1820. At least we're free to own the firearms we wish to up here.

Ahh... who wouldn't love living in the People's Republic of the Democratic Socialist Communist State of Massachusetts?

I don't think that's even the full name... :rolleyes: :uhoh: :D

People's Republic of the Democratic Socialist Communist State of Massachusetts

Should be...The Regime''s Republik of the Democratic Socialist Communist Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
