Assault Weapons:Lethal and Plentiful

Not to take away from Guitargod1985's comments, but I would like to add a couple:

assault weapons

They weren't Assault Weapons. They were semiautomatic weapons with unrelated features defined legally as Assault Weapons. As everyone found out, functionally identical weapons with two or less "features" were outside the legal definition sold in quantites far beyond the remaining legally defined weapons.

crimes involving these weapons dropped by almost 66 percent over the next six years.

The extremely small number of crimes commited with weapons prior to the ban made that number statistically insignificant. Besides, data about the numbers of crimes committed with the legally defined weapons before the ban don't exist.

In the year after the ban took effect, murders of police officers by suspects using assault weapons dropped to zero from 16 in the year before the ban.

The data didn't exist, so it is a misleading statement. If the quoted statistics, are form the famous "VPC study", there are false since every semiautomatic firearm is assumed to be an Assault Weapon. For example, SKS's were counted as Assault Weapons.

According to crime experts, those who aren't supposed to own these weapons can easily obtain them through straw purchases. Someone who is eligible to buy the guns sells them to those who aren't.

Hey, straw purchases are "ILLEGAL!" Why don't you just arrest the sellers instead of trashing the freedom of everyone?

But we could stop the future flow if Congress felt enough pressure from fed-up constituents to reinstate the assault-weapons ban. With two officers slain within months by killers using these extralethal firearms, South Florida should be leading the charge to revive the ban and begin to get these weapons off our streets.

The previous Assault Weapons Ban didn't stop the flow of the type of weapon they wish to ban, it increased it!

I don't know about that Deer Hunter, does anyone want to see what extralethal exploding pants look like?

Dope
