Authenticity of video game weapons?

I thought it was odd that in the COD4 multiplayer, one of the pistols you can get is a Desert Eagle. As if any real soldier or operator on the planet actually uses that for real missions.

That was a tribute to Counter Strike. Possibly the first and easily the most popular terrorist vs. counter-terrorist FPS game.

The weapons in counter-strike are all mirrored. I guess it's 'cool' to have rounds eject into your face. The funny thing is you can choose to carry weapons left-handed or right-handed, but if you carry right, you get a left-handed rifle, if you carry left you get a right handed.....

The first game I can think of that cycled mags was Rainbow Six.

The Battlefield series simply throws away partial mags when you load a new one.

Americas Army was too realistic. Most people would ditch their ARs and pick up an AK/RPD from an enemy ;) Oh and it was fun to 'peg' people with the grenade launcher. (Hit them with the grenade at close range before the safety timer allows it to explode..)

The only FPS I really play anymore is Project Reality. The weapons aren't perfectly modeled, but the gameplay is quite challenging.

I've worked in the video game industry for over 10 years and know a little bit about the process. Unless you're making a contract simulator, you'll almost always choose "gameplay" (ie, fun) over realism in a game. And, unless you're a dinky startup, you'll have legal checking your stuff thoroughly. :)

We were making a tactial squad shooter a few years back (never shipped) and we actually had the SWAT instructor as a consultant. When he came to the office he popped the trunk one and we all just drooled (a lot of the guys have ARs/etc, a few have FAs, so the MP-5 and the P-90 were popular!). We tried to capture slicing the pie, real tactics, etc. We even had him onsite at the motion cap studio.

It really all comes down to sales, if it moves more units because the kiddos get to use a "Deagle" to pop an insurgent, its likely going to make it into the game.

If you want a pretty authentic game, the Insurgency Half Life mod feels pretty good (although you can "respawn"--how unrealistic is that! It ought to format your hard drive when you die!)

If I recall correctly, Counter Strke would let you change the models used for the weapons (hostages, etc). I updated the models to be realistic. I converted the MP5 to the MP5SD, including correct wave file. I loved that game! :)

I agree with MudPuppy, the game should be semi-realistic the ones that are "too realistic" get boring quickly. Who cares what kind of red dot they have on the rifle? ITS A GAME ! I have seen much much worse in movies. The video game developers are making games to make money not too simulate real situations. COD 4 is probably the best game out at the current time, pick up a copy if you haven't already.

Some realistic things that I like about this game is that its one of the few that you can shoot threw walls, most games you can use anything for cover... not in cod4

Yeah, I like it that even concrete block walls are only temporary cover. Until they kill me, then I hate it.

AC-130 Spectre for the win.

I have to say the most frustrating, yet fun thing about possibly playing Counterstrike would be hear people complain about how the terrorists were camping.

From what I understand there is no need for back up sights in COD4. There have yet to be any reports of the primary optics failing. :neener:

Are you ready for this?

The main model designer (wire frame) for CS was left handed. That's why the weapons are left handed. It's what he had to model with. It's stuck with the game through the ages.

I just started playing the PC version of COD4 last night, and the cinematics and voice acting are amazing. I almost never play multi player, and I know that was one of the big draws on this game, but I am really surprised at the effort they put into the single player.

One of my gripes is that I don't know how to turn off full auto. Maybe I just havent found it, but I find I am a much better shot if I can just tap off a few rounds of semi. It's amazing to me that a game with such attention to detail would not have a fire selector. Too much Rainbow Six: Vegas I guess.

It is a "video game sniper's" dream though. One of the funnest things in any FPS is to stand 500 yds away and pick off BGs. In the second mission, after the boat, with constantly spawning enemies, and a 20rd semi auto sniper rifle: Heaven! I spent 10 minutes taking guys out before I realized I needed to move forward.

you cant change from full to semi auto... :-(

you gotta try the multiplayer... and do your self a favor... play at least 20 rounds before you decide if you like it or not...

i was so horribly frustrated at the game for the first hour or two... now i love it... once you start unlocking the different sights, youll really see the shine this game has... and dont get me started about the awesomeness of being able to fire the m-60 through walls and still get kills

Red Orchestra has spoiled me for all other FPS's. The simulation is as accurate as I've ever seen. You can practically read the arsenal stamps on the Mosins, and you must use real iron sights to hit bo diddly. Needless to say, your life span during combat is just about what it was in real life for a Soviet or German grunt on the ostfront.
