HEADS UP

The Class Action Fairness bill (S. 2062) is scheduled for debate on July 6th. This is the bill that Feinstein told the Virginia MMM group in a conference call that she would try and attach the semi-auto ban to.

This bill has good support in the Senate; but the Association of Trial Lawyers opposes it and they are the fourth all-time donor of political money in the U.S. (90% of it to Democrats). Chances are good that Feinstein will try to attach the ban as an amendment hoping to kill the bill outright.

CALL YOUR SENATORS!

The House version of this bill has already passed without any anti-gun amendments, so we still have conference committee and the final vote to fall back on; but it would be a lot safer to kill any ban renewal in the Senate.

We have less than 20 legislative days left. Let's not get lazy in the final weeks.

Better yet, call your representatives and encourage them to introduce legislation banning these stupid poison pill amendments. Or even better, do what I did. Walk up to their front door, knock. Ask them to step out on the porch and discuss it. :D

Congressional Calendar?

I've seen several mentions recently that there are fewer than 20 working days left for this session of Congress. I spent some time searching for a calender which lists the schedule for the remainder of it (i.e., not the "legislative calendar", showing when bills are up for consideration). One reference I found mentioned that the target adjournment date is 1 October. So obviously there's a summer recess in there, after which Congress will reconvene prior to 10/1. Will that occur prior to 9/13?

One reason I ask is that I recall, from when I was working Fed contracts, all of the angst over getting the budget bills passed, stopgap funding bills, etc., which occur at the end of the Fed fiscal year, but more importantly, the massive amount of manuevering and deal-making that happens in order to get these things passed. This seems like an opportune time for Feinstien to attach the AWB renewal. But whether such could be accomplished prior to 9/13, I don't know.

The Senate reconvenes on Tuesday, July 6 and is in session for 19 days (until Sunday, July 25).

July 26 - September 6 is the August recess.

The Senate then reconvenes on Tuesday, September 7.

October 1 is the target adjournment date.

Feinstein knows that if the Senate doesn't act by July 25th she can kiss her little gun ban goodbye. And, even if the Senate acts, the House could always pass a slightly different version of the bill, which would throw it into a conference committee, which will take more time...

Ms. Feinstein won't be kissing any gun ban 'laws' goodbye....just wishing them a nice vacation. Unless some type of more permanent change is affected, power hungry politicians and their ideas about what is good for us all are not going away. Feinstein's constituents just love her and apparently feel that she is serving their needs well. Reasonable restrictions are just fine with a lot of folks, and some of 'em are gun owners.

Thanks for the link, Bubbles. But I wonder why the 25th would be considered a deadline, when Congress will reconvene after recess, before 9/13.

There are only 18 legislative days left in the Senate schedule before the ban expires. Debate takes so long, appointing a conference committee, more debate, approval in the House, etc.

Soon it will reach the point that even if the ban passes the Senate, it can't be enacted before the law sunsets.
