What is the latest on Capitol Hill regarding the AWB?

Are there still legitimate chances for the Dems to renew the ban?

What is the tone?

Does anyone have their finger on the pulse of the legislative session?

Barring any unforseen events, it appears that the AWB will indeed sunset. I just hope it stays dead, because recreating the AWB after it sunsets is no different from renewing it before it sunsets, and I imagine that if it were to come back after the sunset, it would be even worse than it currently is. It could happen the day after the sunset, a year, 10 years, or never.

Check the link in my sig'.

Articles are updated nearly every day.

Bottom line, minimal time on the Senate calendar because of July 26 -September 6 recess.

There's the possibility of a Craig filibuster in the Senate (she only got 52 votes before...not enough to guarantee she could get cloture invoked).

Bush would have to intervene to get a vote in the House. No guarantee the House would pass it.

The float in this section of the forum also has some good information.

Di' and Chuck will keep trying, but they'll need some strong help from W' to get it to pass...I don't think that help is coming.

I like our chances much better now...simply because time is running out.

Once it expires, it's a bit more complicated to get it back...sure a Kerry/Edwards ticket would be more forceful...the Senate could go JackAss...but the House looks to stay Republican with the same leadership...don't think Dennis & Tom would be as inclined to push through a request from John F. Kerry.

The media will do it's best to show the bad effects of the AWB sunsetting, but in time, the truth will get out that it accomplished absolutely nothing. I just hope that they don't enact even more restrictive legislation next time, before the truth gets out.

The Bottom Line: If we can get through unscathed Monday-Friday of next week with no attached amendments, it'll put our odds at 10 to 1 it's DEAD!Even with an amenment attached to a bill it'd be practically DEAD.

Then our only other concern will be coming out of a long 5 week recess with a possible change of wind direction. God forbid another Columbine occurres, or the Media decides to bombard the public with it. Yes, it could pass in just 5 days of September, but only with President Bush's strong will to do so. If he really wanted to he could. But right now it's clear he doesn't want to. He would have to be GREATLY pressured to change his mind, and push for a 5 day process of renewal. He knows it would be political suicide, and is the last thing he wants to do right now.
