Battle rifle in '06 or .308?

2. 30-06 or .308 (or suggest a caliber that is cheap and could also be used for large game)

4. Can mount a scope (thus not a Garand.... I don't want to drill holes in a Garand)

I may have asked this before, but where did you get this deal from?

The rifle was $324 NIB from The Gun Zone in Dallas; I bought it at one of the local gun shows. The scope mount is $45 + shipping from Tantal.

The 21" Saiga 308 does not come with the Dragunov stock; that came on my 16" 223 and I swapped it over. You can buy it, however, from Gilberts for $75, or buy the 16" 308 with it.

I'd say FAL or Saiga .308. And, IIRC, the Saiga is available in .30-06 as well.

It's gonna depend on what feels right to you, I would imagine.

I have a converted Saiga 308 that I LOVE. But there are those who LOVE FAL's and others. The FAL I had never felt right in my hands, and mine was a Century that had reliabillity issues before I got rid of it. Garands are great, but I prefer a detachable magazine that holds more than 8 rounds. M1A is an option, but that gets into an expensive price range for this topic.
