Recently picked up a lightly-used Benelli M1 tactical (pistol grip, ghost ring sights etc). I have hunted with both an M1 and an M2 for years with no reliability issues ever. This one, however, does not want to fully extract fired shells. The bolt pulls the shell out of the chamber but not quite far enough for the fired shell to be thrown out of the receiver, leaving just the tip of the shell, where the crimp has opened up, hanging up. Just pulling on the bolt handle gives no indication of any roughness and you can manually pull the bolt all the way to the rear with no issue. Suggestions?

Or maybe the gun was shot enough that it needs a new spring or maybe extractor

I suspect @Riomouse911 is on the right track if the parts are not worn (worn parts seem kind of unlikely if the shotgun doesn't show a lot of signs of use). My friend and I had consistent issues to eject with his M1. We were just shooting birdshot for fun. Buckshot took care of the problem.

I carried the original M-1’s on duty for over 13 years at my old agency and they would be balky with low-base loads but 100 percent with high base or full-power buck-slugs.

I also saw a couple of guys from a neighboring agency almost fail out of rangemaster school because they brought low base target loads that kept jamming up their Benellis.

I brought an 870 to that course so I had no issues.

I think the newer models that Benelli makes are more reliable with a variety of loads compared to the original M-1 I used.

Stay safe.

One thing about THR, when you ask for advice or comment, you don't have to wait long.
The load thing crossed my mind as well. I had just grabbed a box of low-brass 7 1/2 birdshot, which always functioned fine in my other Benellis. But, since this model is certainly made with full-power defensive loads in mind, I'll try that this weekend. Nothing about the gun shows wear suggesting worn out parts.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll try to report after the next try.

I’m glad you’re good to go. And on the bright side, with some breaking in the shotgun may quite possibly start cycling lighter loads, seen it happen beaucoup times.

Also, inertia shotguns will have cycling issues if too much weight is added. Too much weight is normally in the form of accessories such as tactical lights.

Just a SWAG, but maybe the tactical version has a heavier recoil spring making it less reliable with low powered shells. I have 2 of the M-1 hunting shotguns and they have been 100% reliable with every shell I've ever loaded in them. And 90% have been very low powered shells.

Part of the appeal to me is that my Benelli's have been far more reliable with low powered shells than the Remington 11-87 and Beretta 390 that I sold after buying the Benelli's. Both gas guns that are supposed to be more reliable with light loads. But not in my case.
