Friend of mine just recently got a Bersa Thunder .380. He field stripped, cleaned and oiled it.

We both noticed that when racking the slide, there is a peculiar sound. It kinda has that tone of metal rubbing against plastic. If there was a word to describe it, it would probably be zwip.

It may be nothing, but he does not want to fire it until he knows if this is normal. Otherwise, me thinks that it is back to the factory.

Is this sound normal?

Well, mine makes that noise too.

BTW,

let your friend know to tighten the grip screws real good, and maybe add some loctite, otherwise they tend to loosen.

Also, when unloading your pistol, make sure that you have a magazine (empty) inserted into the pistol before you rack the slide to remove the round in the chamber. It helps force the round into the proper position. Otherwise, you might end up with small dents in the primer.

My series 95 made the same noise but never cause any problems while i had it,i would not worry about it.BTW the gunshop i worked in had a sphinx 380 that made noise like that.

I'm going to take a guess and say it's the recoil spring being compressed down the outside of the barrel .

Cool! thanks guys, appreciate the responses. I'll let him know that it is a common sound. I'll just make sure that the first time out he takes it easy and only shoots target ammo.

Check the recoil spring

You probably put the recoil spring in backwards. Try flipping the spring around and see if that helps.

Zwip!

Mine makes that noise too! :D So has every Bersa .380 I've handled in shops. Nothing to worry about.

I actually really like that sound!
