I have to recommend the S&W 22A as well. Mine has been very reliable with American Eagle and Federal 550rd pack. The iron sights aren't great, but these beg for a red-dot or other optic. I had first time shooters hitting crab apples at 15 yards with it last weekend. I paid $225 (new) for the gun and $30 for the red-dot.

Just thinking outside the box a bit, but if you already own a 1911 pattern pistol, you might consider a conversion kit. I *think* the Kimber conversion kit is right around $300 and it's very easy to install. Then you can shoot 22 with the same trigger as your 1911.

Downside on the Kimber version is they don't lock back on the last round. My Marvel Unit 1 doesn't either, but some manufacturers have modified the designs to lock back.

Oh, and though I never shot a S&W 22A, my father loved his.

Well damn Richard. Did you get the special edition that way or order the barrel? You can't get either now!

BTW... I put about 300 more flawless rounds through the 22A again today. I have probably 5-8k on the original buffer and still going strong!

I bought both of them used as you see them, I bought the 5" black barrel separately.

I really don't know the history on them and S&W's site doesn't offer a quick serial number check.

Both shoot great and I really like the Red-Dot on the 22A-1. I'll probably find another one for the 22S.

The Rugers are nice and many options are available for them but, you can't beat the S&W's for value and ease of cleaning.

I have the Rugers and like them a great ,,,

and after doing a trigger job on them , I find they shoot as well as my S&W model 41 that cost more than twice as much.. Buy the Ruger Target model and don't look back.

Another vote for the Ruger .22's. MK I, II, III or 22/45 they are all shooters that are reasonably priced.

Yep - go Ruger and don't look back.

That said, my brother has a Buckmark he bought new for $300 about a year ago, and it's a dang fine shooter. The trigger and ergonomics are probably a little better than a Ruger's, but it is not as reliable in our experience.

The walther SP22's are under 300 at cdnnsports. I have the m3 variant and i can not believe how accurate it is. Employee at the gun store said a local man won some competition with it. Dont know the details. It has been super reliable no jams with many different types of ammo through it. Some parts feel iffy at best on the gun but like i said never a problem with it. It has the same issue as the neos though, some like the looks some hate the looks.

What? A gun store employee made a claim about how great a <insert gun model here> is, but didn't have details to back it up?

I can't imagine.

Any of the Ruger Mark series are great. My original semi-auto was a Ruger Mark I bought in about the late sixties. I paid about 75 to 80 dollars new. Great pistol. I have long since sold the Mark and now have a Ruger Single 6 and a Phoenix HP22A. The Phoenix is accurate and fun to shoot. I do believe it will not last as long as others but Phoenix has great service and will either fix or replace the pistol for free. I am fortunate to live right near the Phoenix service center so I just go in and order my parts and have them fix my Phoenix.
Regards,
Howard

fishbed, what i meant was I dont have/ remember the details on the guy who won. im sure the gun store guy does. He wasnt selling me one i already had the gun for over 2 years. I mentioned that i liked it alot and how accurate it was and he chimed in about a guy who won with it at some competition.
