Best .22 Rifle Under $400

The ruger really is the ak47 of 22's, it is superbly reliable but inferior in terms of accuracy when compared to other designs as a stock rifle
I disagree, most certainly aren't target rifles right out of the box, but I haven't seen one that isn't hunting rifle accurate (though there are better options for this IMO).

:)

I personally like my MAPFH Unique Modele X51. If you can find one it's an excellent shooter and may put you at your high end priceif you find an unmolested one. It's a gorgeous gun and truly UNIQUE. You also have the ability to shoot it as a semi or single shot. It would make any kid a dreamy first gun. If your looking for a single shot buy the Henry gold.

If you pay $400 for a .22 rifle, it better be a vintage collector rifle or you have money to burn! There are pleanty of .22 rifles for $200-$250 range or less.

I just posted this same question a few days ago. Easier to answer because your son is older.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Kimber Model 82 they sell at CMP. From the reasearch I've done it's a surgical instrument.

They were never issued but many have small cut marks from foolish privates cutting the plastic to check SN's.

The rusted models (I hear they classify them as such for the most minute speck - probably to cut us a break) are exactly 400 plus 22 for shipping to your door.

I'm planning to hand pick one on my way back home for a visit in the spring.

Really nice diopter sichts on them!

I have shot the Marlin 60 for 15 years. Superb little gun and more accurate than it has any right to be. Plastic parts!!!! That being said I would highly recommend it. I smoothed the trigger and got the bolt release lighter with stones and files. Fun project but not really needed. Took a couple hours.

I would go with the CZ452 for a bolt. It is reputed to shoot with the Anshutz but the Anshutz gives up if you don't get it the preferred chow. That makes the 452 BETTER.

Everyone I have known that went with Rugar chased that rifle a few years and ended up putting enuf into it to buy a Anshutz Bi Athalon to start with. They never came thru in the end. Barrels, stocks and triggers.....you go price it

I have to say that I have a distaste for plastic parts on rifles, and I find the M-60 to be an overly complex design, but I have to give credit where due...Ruger has done likewise with the 10/22 and it has risen sharply in price. The M-60 is a fantastic little rifle for the money, and most will generally outshoot a 10/22 out of the box while saving you quite a bit of coin.

OTOH the Ruger is still a decent rifle, and is more than capable of most any task the average .22LR is required to perform. I haven't seen a single one that wouldn't handily dispatch a tree rat from 25yds. straight out of the box.

As much as I like a 452, they don't out shoot an Annie. All .22s have individual tastes in ammo.

That said, I think the 452 is easily the best value in a accurate .22.

From the last page re: savage mark ii made in usa. My ~15 year old mk ii bv is marked made in canada.

It has always been accurate and i loved it when i got it as a 10 year old! However it just feels like a toy gun and i want a full size. Im looking to consolidate it, my henry, a couple marlins, a savage 30, rem 597 all into one nice bolt action. Would prefer an hierloom quality a la anschuitz, one of the 52b or one of the remington bolt guns they produce on/off they have one in the custom shop listed with a .5"@50yard gaurantee

But one of mymrequirements is decent sights with all my 22lr experimentation i found i seldom shoot then over 50-60 yards while hunting and at that range id rather just shoot ironsmmakes t much nicer to carrynin the woods also

yeah i have a Mossberg Plinkster that you can buy new anywhere for $99 and a cheap BSA Scope that cost $20-$30 at Wal-mart and i'm shootin 1/2-1" MOA at 50 yrds.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Remington speedmaster. What a great gun. Reliable and very accurate. I wanted one since I was a kid. Finally after years of looking, my dad helped me find one before he passed. I value it more than my Winchester pump he bought me when I was 16.

You don't see many of these because of their price, but they are woth every dollar spent.

I had a Savage Mark II that I thought was the greatest thing since sliced bread until I bought a CZ 452 American. I gave the Savage to a friend

To be fair.............I've never met a .22 that I didn't like.

Just some more than others.

Savage Mark II BV $235 OTD + a BSA Target Platinum 1/8 MOA dot 6-24x44 on special = ~$300 setup that's capable of 1/4" groups at 50 yards. I've shot one <0.2" group, but average is ~0.4".

Molleman,

I keep an exploded shell from a Remington Plinkster that fired out of battery. That might be a lemon out of a batch of pure gold, but I will never fire that rifle again.

And I love my 452. Now that I am mostly recovered from a thoracic fusion, I plan on getting some trigger time on it. (By the time I got it, my back was so bad that I just couldn't bring myself to get out to the range much). Everyone has their own aesthetics and comparisons they look for in a gun. For what I paid for it, I am more than happy.

The only downside of the CZ is cleaning the bore when you first get it. That is the longest time I have spent, in my entire short life (32 years), cleaning a gun. It took forever, but that's probably because I didn't know what I was doing. There are plenty of threads on that very topic over on RFC (Rimfire Central), which is another great site to check out if you are still considering a .22.

Mine did! I had a new Annie 1416 and a new CZ 452 American and while the groups were close with certain match ammo the CZ out shot the Annie. I still have the the CZ 452 and would have to say that other than a Remington 541-S it may be the best overall .22 I have owned. I would get the CZ in a heart beat!

If I were to buy a bolt action .22, it would most certainly be a CZ. I would monitor GB for a good deal and snatch it up.

I just bought a CZ 452. It's the trainer model with the 24.8" barrel. Seems to be identical to the Lux except for the wood.

I have no experience with 22 rifles (former LEO) but I got dragged recently to a rim fire shoot and immediately fell in love after friends let me shoot their rifles. I spent several days reading about various makes, but when I went to a local gun shop and actually held a CZ that was it. Paid $347 at Bud's vs. $526 at the LGS, although when I balked at the price they came down to $470+8.5% sales tax.

On Monday I ordered a CZ452 Ultra Lux it has a 28,6" barrel. Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow. I figured I needed a good 22 Rifle, the only one that I have is a Winchester MD67 with a smooth bore made in 1935.

You made a good choice. Take the time to throughly clean the brown preservative out of the barrel before you shoot it. If you have any questions about it stop by rimfire central under the cz section.

CZGuy, thanks, and will do both - actually I just joined rfc last evening. Should be here the latter part of next week.

Man...

I wish you had asked about the "best 22 rifle FOR $400.00 or less....

Then I could have suggested the Marlin Original Golden 39A...

I bought this one recently at a gun show in Savannah, Ga. for $400.00 OTD, so guess it's 1c above the price range you set..

Darn..:banghead:

Beautiful rifle. I think it might well be my next acquisition. I've got a soft spot for lever actions. I see it's got iron sights. How do you like them?
