I am looking for a starting point for reloading for the 338-06 Ackley. I want to start with a 225gr bullet (or thereabouts) and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. The load will be used for mule deer and elk out to about 300 yds or so. I am hoping for a muzzle velocity of between 2800 and 2900 fps. Deep penetration and controlled expansion are desired. I am thinking of starting with the 225gr Nosler Partition but the "long range" bullets like the interlock SST are also of interest if they would hold together at higher impact velocities. Real world results would be very exciting to hear about.

I would go with the Partition bullet if you are going to hunt elk.
i run 225 hornady btsp's in my 338 win mag, and even at impact distances as close as 30 yards, i've not experienced a bullet failure.
the slightly more sedate velocity of 338-06 would make me sweat 225 grain bullet selection little.

According to the info that I've found, the 338-06 Ackley doesn't lose much speed against the 338mag. I haven't verified the data yet but I found this on another site.
Can anyone identify it? It looks like it was clipped from a magazine or loading manual. Anyway, if these loads are anywhere close to reasonable, (I realize that they are only estimates as stated in the disclaimer at the bottom of the page) I should be able to come close to the printed velocities with my 25" barrel. I realize that the loads printed are based on a 65,000 psi max pressure but I don't know how far above the SAAMI recommendation for the 30-06 this is. I have read that the 30-06 is rated at lower pressure due to the proliferation of older guns chambered for it. Would it be reasonable to push the pressure in a modern manufacture chrome moly barrel? I realize that there is no industry standard for a wildcat such as the Ackley cartridges.
As far as the bullets mentioned, I have used Barnes in my Browning .270 Win and accuracy was horrible. Not only that but it's been 4 years and I still haven't gotten all of the copper fouling out. I am hesitant to try them again in any rifle. I have never had any trouble with the 150 grain CT Partitions in my 270 so I may have to give the Partitions a try. Thanks for the input.
