I'm looking for a Commander-length all-steel 1911. I already own full-size 1911s (Colt Sistema, Kimber) and a lightweight model (Smith & Wesson PD).

What do you guys recommend in that configuration among current offerings?

I've been really impressed with my Dan Wesson Classic Bobtail thus far. Lots and lots of steel, no MIM at all as far as I can tell, very nice, especially for $800 and change with night sights and other assorted bells and whistles.

I had a couple 'o hiccups at about the 1500 round point w/ my CBOB, but got things all figured out after 2000 -- me & my DW CBOB are good friends now ;)

While I love my old Combat Commander, my fairly new SA Loaded SS Champion (nice bright Trijicons, ambi-safety) has been flawless over its first 500 rounds and is quite accurate to boot -- a pleasure to shoot, and a pretty pistol as well.

Well the Kimbers and Springers, amongst others are 4" bushingless reverse plug setups. Much as I like my Kimber Pro Carry (alloy frame, Pre series II) I much prefer the the traditional 4.25" guns with their traditional recoil spring plug & bushing setup. My SIG GSR is a nice example, but the slide is rather fat compared to other 1911s. Out of the box I liked my Colt XSE Commander. With a matte bead blast job done by my gunsmith, and a self installed Wilson drop-in grip safety I really like it. I'd recommend an XSE (with a Wilson drop in grip safety added - very easy install) over any other sub-$1000 commander size 1911 out there.

love my Charles Daly,no malfunctions with JHP(wont feed LSWC) its accurate all stainless-steel and came with two 8 round mec-gar mags for under $500

I have a NRM Stainless Colt Commander. Absolutely love it. It along with my 3" S&W M66-3 will be two of my last to go if times get tough. It's been 100% reliable, and incredibly accurate (only mods affecting accuracy are an EGW angle-bore bbl bushing).

I have:

1. a Colt ORM, in .38 Super. It was a decent gun. I then sent it to Yost Bonitz and it is quite impressive now.

2. Ed Brown Kobra Carry. One of the most solid guns I've ever owned. Very impressive.

I like both.

I'll second that! You won't find any other brand that comes close to the fit and finish of the DW in that price range.

SA SS Champ

I definitely agree with Old Dog. Mine has been perfect from the beginning. 700.00 Feeds 185 gr SWC's. Totally reliable. :D

Old Dog, from the posts I've read on The High Road, I see that you're outspoken in your objections to MIM parts. You own a Springfield Armory Champion which is full of MIM parts. What gives?

I don't mean to "call you out." I'm genuinely curious how you rationalized your purchase.

I'm looking to buy a Colt XSE which appears to have less MIM parts than other 1911s.

I'm pretty partial to my New Roll Mark Colt Commander. It has been 100% reliable with everything I've fed it so far, including 185gr. LSWC target loads, and it has been decently accurate (3" groups at 25yds benched with loads it likes).

IMO, it is a much better quality pistol than the Spingfield GI I had and my friends Kimber Pro Carry that had to go back to Kimber 3 times before it would work right.

I think you would do well with Colt (s70/s80/XSE), S&W 1911 SC/PD, or Kimber custom/pro carry.

I'm partial to this one:

Thats easy. A Colt Combat Commander, circa 1978, finished in bright nickel, with a Gold Cup trigger, MMC micro rear sight, and all of this work done by the Colt Custom Gun Shop. This is the one of the nicest, and most accurate, Combat Commanders that I have made the aquaintance of.

I too was going to recommend the Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail. The Bobtail makes it conceal on the belt better than a 3" 1911 and it nestles so comfortably into the natural curve of your palm that I find i have better control and consequently shoot it a bit better and definately more comfortably. I liked it so much I had two other lightweight Commanders Bobtailed.

Para-Ordnance

Para-Ordnance LTC is a great commander length 1911, especially for the price. I consistently see these cheaper than other 1911s and the quality is just as good. Has all the bells and whistles too. Beavertail, three dot sights, nice trigger, etc. Great buy.
