I like Kimbers. Primarily the ones made before the series II safety problems, the small parts breaking, and the external extractors that worked some of the time.
Since the Kimbers I'm referring to can pretty much only be found on the used market, getting one for $600 or less shouldn't be too hard. I did it twice in the last year. Would have done it two more times if I had the money.
CZ, Glock, etc may be better for you, but I'm a 1911 guy. One that's spoiled by crisp, <4lb triggers...
