Hey guys,

I was just wondering if any of you had any favorite budget magazines that function reliably/effectively at a good value. They are for my 1911 that punches paper, so my life isn't going to depend on their function. I simply want a few more so I can spend more time shooting and less time reloading.

I'm sure this has been addressed in previous threads, but the search function was acting a bit quirky.

Thanks for your patience.

Yeah I know the problem;
AS to 1911 mags, the good ones are cheap enough, you might save a dollar or 2, not even enough to buy a gallon of gas! I've been using USGI mags for a couple of decades now, like 40 years
my mag
date
backWW2, I bought em wrapped in cheese cloth and cosmoline. A 1911 mag is very straight foward, ahrd to mess-up, Buy the Mil spec mags for the extra dollar and be happy, tell the wife you spent extra, just for her! Gve her a fake pearl necklace at same time!

What she doesn't know won't hurt her.....but when she knows, she might hurt me.

Thanks for the advice.

I agree with kenno in general, but trust me, you can screw it up if you go to cheap on the steel for the tube body, spring, follower, or weld the bases cheaply. Any "known" maker magazines should work well. But avoid the no-name gun show ones and from some sellers and GunBroker. They are foreign made copies and don't last very long.

Metalform makes decent magazines and does OEM supply to Colt, SA, and I think others. Theirs are often available at good prices from places like CDNN and such. Also, there's a sticky by 1911Tuner in the autoloader forum about "fake" magazines, it's worth scanning through to help educate yourself to avoid the cheaper knock-offs.

I figure the best cheap mags are Kimbers. The great thing is that you can get what some consider the best for about five dollars more per mag.

ACT mags came with my Citadel ... let's just say that they are range-only now that I've replaced them. It might be a gun/mag thing, I'm not badmouthing the company in general and I don't have any other pistols to jam those ACT mags int to test.

I have a couple McCormick mags, they're pretty nice, they feed reliably and have slam-pad attachment holes in the bottom ... the rattling annoyed me while carrying though.

I bought a pair of Wilson magazines to see what the big deal was, I ended up ordering three more, they're surely worth it if you wait on a sale, and probably worth it if you buy them for MSRP.

ACT's have run fine in my taurus and in my uncle's rock island. small sample set I know, but the results have been positive. I was going to go with shooting stars, but the ACT's were half the price. and since the OP is looking for for casual range use only, they don't need to be awesome. and they're the mags that come with the STI spartans. not STI's top of the line gun, but I can't see them putting junk out wither.

My sample size is even smaller, on more thought, get what's cheap for range time, but get a few reliable mags for a class or possible carry if that ever comes up.

I've played with surplus, Chip Mc's, Wilson's, Kimber's OEM.

I've got about 20 Metalform magazines in different calibers sitting around the house/safe.

I like Metalform the best. Wilson probably #2.

For a good "shoot-everything-and-make-most-guns-run-smoothly-for-not-a-lot-of-money" magazine, take a look at the Checkmate 7 round blued hybrid. Around 16 bucks, and they also supply magazines to Colt as far as I can remember.

Tuner has written quite a bit about these mags, and they work great for me.

Can order directly from Checkmate industries, or from Top Gun supply. Top gun is cheaper if you're only ordering a few. Checkmate will give you a pretty good sliding price scale depending on how many you buy. (At least they used to)

I've had good luck with Chip McCormick Shooting Stars in my Kimber. Has anyone tried out those offered at Ammoman.com - "45 ACP MAGAZINES GOVT. CONTRACT 1911 MAGS" (10 delivered for $99)
