Merry Christmas all, I am about to start loading for 300h&h, and I've seen a bit of different info about primers for it in a few manuals I've looked at. Some say Wlr primers, some WLRM, others magnum primers only. IMR4350 is the powder I'm most likely to use since I have a bunch, but it seems to me it might require a magnum primer to light off 65+ grains of stick powder. Probably just loading Sierra game Kings at 165 grn. What are you guys using for primers?

Back when I was struggling to find a load for my then new Steyr in 8x68S I did quite a bit of testing with Mag primers. Finally settled on FED215s.

Years later I went through the same process looking for primers for my BPCRs to shoot with BP and ended up with FED251Ms. For both applications they increased velocity and lowered my SDs.

back when primers were hard to get i had to use mag primers in all my pistol and rifle match loads. i did test with my chrongraph to see if was a different between standard and mag primers. so i loaded my match loads with both and to the backyard range i go. what i found is, yes there is a different in fps between the two. not much depending on the cabiler, it ran between 20 fps to 50 fps higher with mag primers over standard. no other problems were noted and i got a better "sd" on some. i did not have to change any sight adjustments. also there are some primers brands that the box will state "for standard and magnum loads". so i buy mag primers and use them in pistol and rifle loads.

I owned and shot a 700 Classic in .300 H&H for more than a few years. I used Win LRM primers but if I were out I wouldn't hesitate to use a Fed LRM primer. IMR4350 was the only powder I ever used for that cartridge, shot so well I never saw the need to use anything else.

Brass lasts forever for this cartridge unless you go nuts with heavy loads. It is capable of doing anything the .300 WM can do.

I use WLR primers in my standard cartridges. I used to have a 300 WSM, which has nearly identical powder capacity and produces nearly identical speeds with the same bullet weights as 300 H&H. Initially I used CCI magnum primers in the 300, but ran out and was unable to find any at the time. I loaded up a few with the regular large rifle primers I had on hand and saw no difference in accuracy and if there was any loss of speed it was within the margin of error on my chronograph. Just to keep things simple I continued using large rifle primers until I sold the gun.

It is my understanding that both the 300 WSM and 300 H&H are right on the edge of where you truly need magnum primers. Any more powder capacity and you need to go with magnum primers. I have also experimented with magnum primers in standard cartridges like 308. I didn't find any downsides, but saw no advantages either.

If the 300 is the only magnum rifle you have and don't want to have to stock 2 different primers you might want to just stay with standard primers. I'd at least try a few rounds and see how they work. If you already own other rifles where you need magnum primers anyway then use them in the 300 as well

I don't load for the H&H but I do load for a few other 300 Magnums that have similar case capacities. The CCI Large Rifle Magnum Primer has worked well in all of them. Theres probably not a wrong answer here but I think a magnum primer should be used.
