Best value for a CMP "shooter" M1?

Which of the CMP's currently available M1 options will give me the best value as a "shooter"; meaning decent accuracy, reliability, not horrible cosmetics, etc?

My brother got a decent M1 used from a private individual, but it ended up needing a new barrel before it was competitive at our local club matches. Should I just add a $100-200 to the price of the gun in my head to be ready to do similar mods when it shows up?

best thing to do is first of all, if you buy over the net, try to find someone whos RELIABLE AND HAS REFERENCES. you dont want to plunk down your hard earned cash to get your rig, just to find out like your bro did that the barrels shot out of it.


im assuming that your firearm savy, but best thing yo can do when examining one in person is to check the bore for dark spots and pitting. this is best done with one of the new LED flexlites that wal-mart carries. there about 9.00, and work great. check it over completely. make sure the rifing in the bore is nice and sharp!....many a sweetheart of a rifles been sold that looked like it was never shot just to find out the person was a cronic neat freak and cleaned there gun after every shot...

also,do be discoraged by a stock that looks alittle rough. there alot of tricks that can be done while refinishing a stock to raise dents and dings that make them un noticable. youll also find that MOST of the older rifle stocks actually have gorgeous grain and texture when you clean all of the old finish and crud off of them, and just finish them with eather tungoil or polyurathane..........

watch for heavy pitting in the barrel and action,ect. you cant put this metal back, and unless treated properly, it WILL return.

If you are going to buy a "shooter" CMP gun then the service grade (SG) would probably be the best bet. Right now the CMP SG M1's can be had anywhere between $450 - $525.

The service grade M1 will shoot up to the standards set for an GI weapon. Formal target matches have much higher standards.
If you are going to seriously compete with the rifle, you very well may have to put some money into the rifle to be competitive.

CMP M1 Service Grade will be what you are looking for. I bought mine early last year and am very happy with it. The stock has a few little "dings", but they are character. Remember, you are buying a 50-60 year old rifle, not a pristine hunting rifle off the shelf.
