I would like a box mag, but most don't have it (Rem 5 does). I would also like a receiver sight.

Or should I look for used???

I would say try used first, but if you're buying new i would suggest a marlin 980S...not sure what they're going for but they're pretty cheap and pretty good.

Any used Marlin bolt in .22... Or if you can find one in your price range CZ.

CZ Scout. It'll cost you a tad more, about $200 flat, but it's a well built little gun and the perfect size for kiddos. Bought one for my 10 year old niece a couple years back. I think I've had more fun with it than she ever has. Darn good little gun.

A CZ Scout will run $250. I don't think what you describe is available for 150 new. Closest is the Savage Mark II GY, a great rifle with a 10 shot mag, but no peep sight. You can get those for $150 and IMO they are the best at that price.

Try and get one that fits the kid. That's the most important thing about his/hers first rifle.

it is a little more than $150.00, but he would be able to use it forever. a CZ452 scout rifle. comes with a magazine dummy, so it is a single shot. drop out the dummy, and you can add a 5 or 10 round magazine into it with a click. when he gets older, they make an adult sized stock for it, just unscrew the youth stock, and drop it onto the adult stock. done deal. it is something to consider.

Ouch, they've gone up in price. 20% to boot. You used to be able to order them from Wally World for $200. Oh well, still worth the price.

CZ 452 Scout. The accessory 5-round metal mag sits flush while the 10-round plastic one sticks out pretty far.

For $310 I found them overstocked at the local gun store about 6 months ago going for $280. You can't go wrong with the CZ.

Local Scout is about $280 - not bad, but almost TWICE what I want to spend now. The only SMALL Savage I see is a single shot. The "youth" model (not Cub) is a full size gun - nice, but thick/big stock. Rem 5 has a small version, but don't know about them - mixed reports.

The Savage Mark II GY has a 19 inch barrel and a short stock. It is no larger than the Remington Five youth.
