Hey all, I have been looking at a lot of 1911s lately, I have even held a few. Of all the ones that I have handled and been looking at, three have really stuck out to me. Springfield Armory, Kimber, and Sig Sauer. For those who have experience with any of these weapons any feedback would be useful. Such as have you had problems with these brands in the 1911 format, also how is their customer "service" ? I plan on using it for ccw so reliability is a must. Thanks for any info guys.

Springer

I have the springfield loaded for target practice several hundred rounds and no malfunctions as to say.

owned all three and would choose...of the 3 you are interested in...the Springer too.

QC of the Kimber has been hit and miss. early Sigs had some design problems and their grip safety hurts my hand.

my personal choice..in a 1911 at the lower price point you're looking at...would be:
1. S&W if you don't mind the external extractor and want to buy domestic
2. Dan Wesson if you don't mind buyin foreign and if you're interested in the bob-tail model

there are better choices in .45 for CCW

DW is foreign owned, by CZ, but they are American made.

There are not better choices for concealed carry in .45ACP than a Commander sized 1911A1. It is flat and concealable and so too are the magazines.

Weight isn't everything, its main demand is that you need to spend serious scratch on a great belt and holster system.

For a mass market 1911A1, my choices go Colt, DW, Springer.

Can you let us know what specific models you're looking at for these brands? You mention CCW do does that mean you're looking at Commander or smaller sized guns, or are you planning to carry a full-sized model?

My preference would be Springfield first, and then Kimber and Sig tied for a distant second. Though before making a generalization like this, I'd like to know which guns you've looked at already.

For a CCW purpose, hands down, I'd make the SW1911PD number 4, and probably lean that way on the choice

I have the SIG and its fine (a later model after the issues were resolved). Don't have the SA, but I would choose either of these before the Kimber. Some Kimbers are fine, some are not; all are over priced.

RMD

I have shot all three but i carry a full sized kimber every day and yes i love it, looking for another one as we speak, if i were you go shoot all three and then make your decision, that is what i did and the kimber was by far the most accurate and that is what i based my decision on because i was going to carry it everyday

SA first choice. Dan Wesson would be a good choice in the $1000 price range. If you want anything in the higher-end, you may want to get a semi-custom like Wilson, Les Baer, NightHawk, Eb Brown.

Maybe SIG.

No more Kimbers for me. Hype over quality for years now. (I've been collecting M1911s for going-on 20 years.)

full-size

Hey thanks for the info thus far. I am looking into a full-size for carry and as for the models that I have looked at: the springer was a loaded, sig was Nitron, and the kimber was gold match II. Thanks again for the help.

For the money you are not going to find a better factory 1911 than the Dan Wesson line... they are excellent pistols.

I would pass on the S&W. I will not own a 1911 with a schartz safety system.

The GSR I used to own was a real tack driver... accessories are harder to come by because of their very Sig like profile. For various reasons I no longer buy new Sig products. Same reason I will not buy a kimber. QC

The Springer is a popular choice. They are decent guns and run well..... I would also consider the new Colt Combat.

I prefer the 45 Colt Commander if I had to choose. But at 1000 dollars or so, I went with the M&P .45 at a better price point.

I dont know enough about the other two guns to make a choice.

The best gun is one that will fit YOU perfect and YOU understand where all the bits are and how to work em.

price

The price max that I am able to do is low 1k no more than 1125 tag price.

In this price range, you have lots to choose from.

I would suggest the Dan Wesson Pointman 7 (5") or the Commander Bobtail (4.25"). If you listed all the gun brands in this price range and itemized all the included features including brand & cost of upgraded parts, the Dan Wesson line gives the most "bang for the buck".

The Sig takes standard mags, but all the ones that I've seen use a proprietary external extractor.

I have a couple of SA's; they're nice and I have no complaints. I have a couple of Kimber's; I favor them over the SA's and carry them regularly. I have a basic Colt 1991 Series 80 that I bought used for $525, and it's the best dang 1911 that I own.

COLT.

Everything else is a copy.

cant really argue with that.

doesnt really mean there are not better 1911's out there, but i, for one, cant say there are better ones.

i have a colt governement model and sold it because i wanted an alloy framed commander sized pistol for carry, and ended up with my kimber procarry2.

to this day ive never seen a pistol with a factory finish that was as perfect as that gov. model.

i like my procarry better simply because its so much lighter, but i could never say its a better pistol than that colt was.

i wish i had kept it and just found a way to buy the kimber for carry.

In your price range I would say that Springfield will get you the most value. I hear Kimber has QC problems but I don't know first hand. Sig uses an external extractor which is stronger but is not a true 1911 design. If you ever decide to sell Colt resale is best but of your 3 choices I think Springfield does best.
