Well I turned over a "New Leaf", slowed down on the consumption of adult beverages and began commuting to work on my bike, bicycle that is!

Need some suggestions on a bicycle gun, lightweight and small would be what I am looking for, no wheelguns! being a lefty is hard enough...

any suggestions?? :D

I like wheel-guns for bicycling. It takes two hands to clear an auto's jam, but with a revolver you just pull through again.

-And semi-auto's are more likely to jam when you are bicycling. The vibration and mixed vectors of biking make recoil mechanisms do funny things.

BTDT.

Just my opinion.

Since revolvers are out I'd say pick a subcompact Glock in your favorite caliber. They don't fit my hand and I don't think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread, but they don't seem to fail too often.

It sounds to me like you might want to look at a light weight revolver in .38 special or .357 magnum, despite your no wheelies prejudice.
The revolver's ability to load a chamber or two with specialty rounds that won't cycle an auto should not be overlooked. A round or two of shot can be used to discourage aggressive dogs without the possibility of richochets of a conventional round. If you want to be extra-kind to Fido, you can even make that first round a blank.

No suggestions on the gun but congrats on the move to bicycling. I started riding to work year round about 15 years ago and it has made a HUGE difference towards slowing down my personal aging issues. It's like you're forced to "go to the gym" every day and it even soothes your nerves since you're not dealing with idiots on the road.

I would have recommended a wheel gun..... .38 spcl airweight..... but that's off the table.... so I guess a derringer in .38 would be my next option...

Why do you not just want the best gun for the job?

These used to be pretty popular -

Just being playful...

Maybe too...it would depend somewhat on how you plan to carry it...as for what Hand Gun would be a good choice.

Or phrased differently, how do you carry now, and what do you carry now, that you arealready well familiar with, and is there any reason it would not be fine for Bicycle?

Thanks, I really didnt know if I would like the whole "commuting" by bicycle thing, but I really enjoy riding!
Getting up and leaving at 5am, its quiet, no traffic-or not much. I get to work awake and ready to go!

and its only 11miles, so not bad!
Ride a single speed, MTB-looking to pick up a fixed gear roadbike also! Talk about a HOOT to ride!

Well, I usually carry an XDM, inside the waist holster, but I really dont think it will work while riding. I carry a pack, so it would easily fit in the bag, but I am looking for something a bit smaller and lighter. Something more discreet because of work!

The problem with carrying it in the pack is that drawing the weapon will much harder then when it is on my person. I had thought about a Keltec P32, extremely light and thin-but I had nothing but problems with the .380 version, dont know if I should go down the road again.

When you buy your fixed gear don't skimp on the cog, lock ring or cranks. You want to get a bombproof drivetrain. Also please ride a front brake.

I met a couple guys who antelope hunt off mountain bikes with Xp 100's and Contenders.

How's that for bicycle carry?

Of you could get one of those older Witness pistols with a blue yellow or pink composite grip to match your biking shorts. ;)

That, my friend, is what we call a wheelgun.... :)

For an as yet undisclosed reason the OP does not want a revolver....

Though I'd have recommended a 340pd, you specified no wheelgun. The next on my list would be either a CZ Rami, or Kahr PM9

You should prob worry more about carry method than gun type. Carrying a 1.5-2lb gun would not be tough while on a bike, you just want it to be balanced and secured. Figure out the carry method that works/that you like, then the gun that works best with that. Put some thoughts into bicycle strategy and tactics, too. Do you need to be able to draw and shoot while straddling the frame, or would you use your bike for E&E and only dismount to shoot as a last resort? What scenarios do you think you're likely to run into? These are going to determine your gun/carry method choice.

Oh...just a thought...something you can operate fairly easily with one hand, left or right, would be a good choice. Being on a bike really increases your chances of having a broken limb to deal with.

I am generally not too fond of the concept of open carrying for tactical reasons, but a bike might be the perfect time to OC. It would prevent the barrel from angling toward your body as much if you had an on-the-belt holster, and the usual reasons I recommend against open carrying (people knowing you have a gun) are minimized because no one is going to be around you very long if you can average 15mph during your commute. You could wear a button up shirt or light jacket to hide it when necessary too.

I used to ride my Trek on 100mi a day recreational camping trips. In my hay day I would do a 25mph average (Not real flat where I live).
I would carry my NAA 22LR in my handle bar bag to keep the weight down with the tent, bag, and supplies. Never had to use it.
I drive one of my many cars and trucks to work now days.

You may resume your thread.

Ruger LCP 380. You did not like the Kel-Tec 32, the Ruger is about the same size / weight as a P3AT; it's light (a plus on a bike) and pocketable, discrete at work.

I have been carrying guns of bikes for years. i actually deer and rabbit hunt with my encore pistol in a backpack.

right now, i am carryiing a Kahr P40 on both my road and mt bike. I commute to work every day. the Kahr is very light and powerful. I simply place it in either a fanny pack or camelbak. I cannot believe you are going to fire while you are riding--you will surely wreck, so the stuff about the semi-autojamming is not only makebelieve but useless. A revolver would be fine too.

nope...easy peasy with some miles as a base. i regularly clock 100 miles days...done as many as 5 in a row. if flat it really is not too difficult.

as for carry. i commute a bit and generally have to carry a change of clothes and end up with either crap in panniers or a messenger bag. I have a few bags that I sewed velcro into and flap a holster to it. I dont intend to ride and shoot at the same time :p plenty of time to stop, slow down or fall off and draw from the bag.

i have ridden with appendix, sob and strongside in and out...just generally not comfortable over time and miles as everything gets rubbed.

i roll with my g19 and with a messenger bag have enough room to carry whatever else i want...

Barely into it and you're already doing single speed and planning on going with a fixie? Talk about jumping into the deep end of the pool! ! ! ! :D

Tried the fixie thing a couple of times and just could not wrap my head around the need to constantly pedal after too long with freewheels. I just gave up and went back to a freewheel on my own roadie single.

Still not much to add on the whole gun option other than it would seem to make a lot of sense to work on possible scenarios as suggested by conwict above.

If you're going to use a backpack all the time what about a shoulder strap mounted flap holster sewn or fastened low on the shoulder strap so it sits down along the side of your rib cage where it can be cross drawn? Again it would depend on what the most likely type of situation would be. If it's out in the open remember to make some arrangements in how you holster it to cover it from the elements as well.
