Interesting reactions .... the Big 5 web site shows the weekly special to include ....

M91/30’ RUSSIAN MOSIN NAGANT for $89.95

I suppose an ill informed clerk might translate this to M1 for $89

Hook,

The clerk that I talked to, which is where the $89 price comes from, didn't say they were on sale right now. He said the current price was $229, but that when they go on sale (and Big 5 often has firearms on sale), they would go for $89.

While the clerk that I talked to was probably misinformed, and I have doubts about the whole thing to begin with (which is why I called 4 times), this current ad has absolutely nothing to do with what is being discussed.

The only way we are going to find out if this is rumor, bad info, unknowledgable clerks, or the truth, is to go past the clerks, and talk to someone in charge at corporate. I will be doing that first thing in the morning, and I will post what I find out here, as soon as I know.

I don't know if any of you remember "Paragon Sales", but they sent out pre-sale flyers to all FFL dealers back in the early 1990's, offering NEW Australian L1A1 rifles for $600. At the time, the L1A1's were selling for about $800 in "used" condition. I sent a check to Paragon for 2 rifles.
A couple of months later, Paragon sent back a refund, with a note that said that they had sold out. Oh, well!

At the next gun show that I went to, a vendor had a huge display of NEW Australian L1A1's, and they had the price tag of $1,300 on each. I happened to notice that one of the shipping boxes at that vendor's table had a shipping label on it, and it said "Paragon Sales". That vendor eventually copped out to having bought ALL of the L1A1's from Paragon! I asked him what his price would be to an FFL, and the jerk snidely grinned and said, "There's the price tag!" What a GOUGER!

If Big 5 swung a deal for a quantity of M-1 Garands, I can guarantee that you won't see them priced at $100! If there is ANY truth about those Israeli re-imports, there'll be some "back room" wheeling and dealing done....and you won't see them listed for only $100! You might not even see them at your local Big 5 store!

Some of the best advice I've ever been given I will pass on to you "Believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear." If its true enjoy gentlemen as no stores in my area. But I won't believe it until I see it. Maybe lol.

Okay, got off the phone with the person at Corporate.

Turns out he isn't the buyer, but the guy in charge of the rules and regulations for firearm sales.

He hadn't heard anything about it yet, and told me that I really should talk to the buyer, who won't be in the office today.

So I left him a message, and I hope to hear back from him later this week.

I don't think it is true, but if it is, I sure want to get my name put on one of them. ;)

Just one?

Unfortunatly, yeah, just one. :(

My wife would give me hell if I bought more than one. Even if, by some miracle of all miracles, Big 5 brings them in and sells them for $100, I am going to still catch a lot of flack for purchasing one.

Just the way it goes.

For $100 you can't afford NOT to buy more than ONE. If they really sell them for $100, take out a loan and buy all you can. I am serious. Buy 10-20 of them if you get a chance. If you bought 10 of them and sold two of them later for $500 each, you just got 8 FREE M-1 Garands! If you sold 3 for $500, you just made $500. How can your wife get mad at you for making money?

I'd max out every credit card I owned, and face the wrath of my wife after the fact. You would make your money back many times over.

How?

If Big 5 does get 100,000 Garands, and sells them for $100, what makes the one that you bought worth that much more? (In other words, why would I give you $200 for your import marked Garand when I can march down to Big-5 and buy an identical one for $100?)

The same reason why if you bought one from a mail order catalog in the 50s for $65 that you could sell it for $1000.......supply IS going to dry up.

If you have been watching Garand price at CMP you can see them creep up $50 to $100 every so often.

.......and I wouldnt put much hope into buying a Garand for $100 at the Big 5. In fact Im sending about 6 times that amount of money to the CMP in 4 days for one......thats about how much I dont believe this.

I 'spect this is about as legit as Neverland Ranch, but on the off chance it is:

Cost + shipping + $100 + a little extra, depending on how many you can get

C&R + empty bound book = sad, sad eastwood:(

I would like to have an THR member acctually lay eyes (or hands) on one before I'll get my hopes up. I have talked with to many ignorant/misinformed sales people to trust one over the phone.

When we do get a confrimation, you can bet that I'll be down there with the remains of my bank account, piggy-bank, couch cushions, and missing a few pints of blood and plasma.:D

I just called the Texas store and they have some, but they will not ship
This needs to be followed up on ASAP. Come on west coast, if I lived near one I'd check every hour. I'd appreciate an update as to the results.

Service Soon

Which Big 5 store did you call? I live in Texas and I want to see one of these with my own eyes.

Mike

Amazing how many posts an idle rumor con generate.

But I guess we REALLY want this to be true...

(BTW, if its true, I'll buy one! Or more...)

Just so ya know... :)

Checked with the store down the street here in Sacramento, dude didn't have any in or know anything of it. He says they never know what they get 'till it comes, trucks come in every Thursday, so check back.

Didn't feel like calling the dozen other stores in town so I'll wait 'till one of you guys finds out!

Tim

I went in to a few big fives in the Los Angeles area today, no one knew anything, they hadn't received anything, they haden't heard anything, but they said that they would put a few on hold if they came in. told me to check back on the days that the truck comes in.

the individual stores will probably be getting the merchandise the week before the add runs, and they will hold the rifles till the sale for you.

I was told that there would be no limit to the number of rifles that could be put on hold (within reason)

sooooo now to wait for the results from the corporate purchaser.

Well, I reckon all you western folks lost out, because Big 5 sold their whole inventory of those M1s to the Dollar General store chain. Yeaaaaah, I checked 'em out and yeaaaaaah, $89.99 on sale...but I think they're bogus because they are labeled as M1-D and M1-C and have been Bubbaed up to fit some kinda funky old Weaver or Lyman Alaskan scopes which are attached. Dang! I knew it was just too good to be true for real surplus M1 Garands.
