During the movie Derailed, I watched the part where he gets his "friend" to scare the BG to leave him alone. In the car this wannabe thug told main character not to worry, beacuse the gun was empty, as it was just being used to scare the BG. Now even though I'm new to the scene, using an empty gun like that has to be one of the most stupidest things to do. I was shaking my head, as I would rather not even carry, than carry with no ammo. Is this tactic good in any way, or am I right?

Haven't seen the movie.
However, assuming the gun was a semi-automatic, how could anyone visually tell it was "empty?" Was the slide locked back? Was the magazine removed?

Course, there are people in the world who aren't going to be "intimidated" by a gun until it actually goes off.
I recall a lady accosted in a parking lot by a guy with a gun in his wasteband with the safety on, who, recognizing her advantage, drew on him and held him for police. IIRC

I saw the movie and that was pretty stupid of that character. I don't think you should try to "scare" someone with a gun, but even if you did it wouldn't hurt to have ammo. I mean you might end up needing it! If you don't plan on shooting anyone, then don't squeeze the trigger. A gun without ammo is just a paperweight.
well, I'm kinda new here, but a little surprised by this thread. Does anyone here really htink that Hollywood is going to get it right? Those guys don't even get it right when they know something about the subject. I would say that the entertainment industry is about the most self-defense and firearm ignorant community in the entire US.

It seems to me that this scene constitutes just one more case of moral bankruptcy of Hollyweird. They decry gun owners, then present gun owners ALL OVER the big screen. They know that brandishing a gun is illegal, but they present it as not only acceptable, but non-dangerous. Holly weird is the enemy! Boycott their movies and anything the promote. If every gun owner in America would do so, Hollyweird would get the idea. Heck, maybe they'd even get a movie right. But, to their "defense", the government and powers that be, have used the media (and still do) nearly forcing that they present such and such a movie during war time to solidify the ranks in the public. Boycott Hollyweird!

A number of years back I was entering a drinking establisment and a guy I vaguely new was being ejected. The bouncers were lecturing him " That was a really stupid thing to do" and so on but the weren't throwing him out head first as they usually do.
Turns out he got into it with some other guys and pulled a plastic gun.
Lucky I suppose that nobody pulled a real one.

Brandishing a gun is NOT a crime in PA, Threatening someone with a gun when you are unjustified IS a crime. And as per a local DA and Sherriff, Drawing a gun and using it as a threat to stop property crime is NOT deadly force. And it most certainly IS NOT a crime to brandish a gun in self defense...
