Hi Folks

I am new to shotguns, the only one I have is a mossberg 590A1. I recently tried trap and skeet shooting, I had a blast and want to do it more. I also want to try turkey and pheasant hunting this fall. I am looking to get a shotgun that can do all three task for no more the $400. What are my options?

Price wise you could look for a Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870, both are good choices for a 'all purpose' shotty.
Look around for a combo type for sale...slug barrel and bird barrel [with screw in chokes]. Both gun's can be found with factory or after market turkey barrel.
Add ons that are nice...sling swivels and slug/turkey sights...cammo finishes are OK but a bit overpriced.
This time of year look for the sales at Gander or Cabela's.

Man, you can buy danged near anything USED in a pump or sometimes auto for well under 400 bucks. Pumps like Wingmasters and Mossbergs and the various Mossberg built branded stuff (like the Revelation 310 I used to have) are out there for cheap and still working great!

870 is hard to beat for an all around gun. Just make sure you can change the chokes and I would recommend against a supershort barrel probably go with 26" at least.

Gene, I got my Maverick 88, it is the 'sport' version of the 500, and is made by Mossberg. It costs about $160+-, leaving you with a little under $240 to play with. I have been able to buy ammo for mine to shoot everything from squirrels to moose. (Granted, I'd take a 300 Ultramag over the 12-Ga. for moose any day), but back on track, if you are doing the skeet/trap shooting on a recreational level, I think this would be a good base. It accepts 500 barrels, chokes, and many other parts.

Another SG you may wish to consider is a previously enjoyed (a.k.a. used) Remington 1100. You can run light 2 3/4 loads through it for clay games, and most any 2 3/4 hunting load for most upland hunting situations. Plus, it is a very light recoiling SG. Just an idea.

OR look for a used Beretta 303 or 390 wally world special.
The 390 is an excellent all around shotgun.
Just a little reminder, what you spend on the shotgun is but a mere fraction of what you will spend on ammo to wear out the shotgun. Now days closer to 30 fold over the life of a Beretta 390.
Look for a 20 or a 12 they both work on the same game, except maybe geese - maybe.....
