What is the best way to re-blue the receiver on a post 64 winchester 94?
I understand this is not all steel and done incorrectly will leave a purplish hue on the receiver. What other methods could get a good finish?

Hot blue using Brownell's Oxynate 84. Sometimes a decent blue can be had from using Brownell's Oxynate 7 with Oxynate "S" added to the solution.

Some of the rifles made in the 60's, and possibly into the 70's have that reputation. I'm not exactly sure when the change happened, but starting at least in the early 80's I don't think there is anything special needed. It would depend on exactly when the rifle is made.

It is definitely a deserved reputation. Model 94 Winchesters of the '70s and '80s WILL NOT blue using conventional methods. Many single shot shotguns have receivers that will not blue(they are cast iron IIRC). If I had a Model 94 of that time period today that needed refinishing, I would opt for a spray and bake finish.
