Bolt Rifle with Iron Sights

Howdy,

Looking to purchase a rifle in the not-so-distant future. I would like something not to far off from a WWI or WWII combat rifle. Something with wood and steel, bolt action, can be current production or used - stainless steel would be a plus if it is a current production piece.

Not much experience with rifle so I really don't even know what brands to be looking at. Open to any suggestions even if they stray from what I'm looking for.

This is largely just for target shooting and fun. I own a few magnum handguns - I like things that go BOOM.

91/30 seems to agree with most of your criteria. If you can find it, one of the carbine versions is even more "bang" for your buck as it were. I know every time I take my Russian M44 to the range and fire surplus out of it, all the heads turn my way for the first couple of shots!!
 
M38 Swedish Mauser would be my recommendation or a Mauser 98 variant.
 
I am currently looking for pretty much the same thing as you are. I would suggest checking out the CZ 550 Lux. It has a Mauser type action, walnut and steel, adjustable iron sights and a very nice trigger mechanism. I started another thread on it asking about the price on this.

I rather have CZ.....but to meet the stainless steel criteria....look at the Rugers....that is if old tired surplus does not get your attention
 
"CZ 550" was the first thing that sprang to my mind as well. They're old-school Mauser action hunting rifles. The "American" version has no irons, but don't get that one. Get the one with iron sights and you'll never regret it.

If you're wanting an actual surplus firearm, that's another matter.
 
What is your budget for the rifle, and at what ranges were planning on placing your targets?

I like the 03 Springfield or a 1950's FN made Colombian Mauser as a mil-surp choice, both are in easy to find .30-06. The Swede 96 Mauser would be a very close second.
 
Go for a mosin if your LGS stocks them and will let you hand-pick. Take a bore-light with you.

Find a good one, and you're set. Cheap(ish) gun, cheap ammo, and...when the archangel stock becomes available for sale later this year, will no longer have the 5-round limitation, although it gets rid of all the wood.

Cheap milsurp guns are also a good way to improve your hobby skills. You'll be forking money over to Home Depot and Lowes before you know, just to pamper your new acquisition. :D

As for the ppl suggesting 30-06...in the current climate, it's almost unavailable. I -just- bought a Garand, and love shooting it, but I haven't been able to find ammo for it. :banghead:
 
I have to reload for my Garand, but I can find all kinds of standard ammo to run through my other four or five .30-06's

Best part is then I have more brass to reload for my Garand...
 
Easy, look for a k98K....there are plenty of nice steel Redfield and Lyman sights on ebay...or you can just go with the "factory" irons.....

Budget? I would say anything under $1500.

Ranges would be 25-100 yards. I'm not an avid hunter but I would like it to be able to serve that purpose if called upon.
 
My favorite military bolt guns are the Finnish M39 variety of Mosin Nagants. They are a bit more expensive (300-400 dollars) but are well worth the extra investment. The barrel is free floated, sights are improved, stock is more comfortable, and the trigger is miles ahead of a 91/30.
 
How about pistol-magnum bolt rifles? I already own a good bit of .357 and .44? I see ruger does make some rifles in those calibers.

I'm referring to the Ruger 77/44 and 77/357

But I do like the look of the rifles recommended.
