I realize that this is not the type of thing that is best learned by reading a book, but is anyone aware of a good book on the finer points of rifle marksmanship? I am looking for not only the basics like proper stance and breather control but also things like trajectory and compensating for bullet drop and wind.

Jack O'Connor's The Complete Book of Rifles and Shotguns has quite a bit to teach, most of it is very introductory.

I take his tips and hit the range with a 1000 or 2 rounds of .22LR and a rifle, works for me.

Benchrest shooting:
1) The Accurate Rifle by Warren Page
2) The Ultimate in Rifle Accuracy by Glenn Newick
3) The Accurate Varmint Rifle by Boyd Mace

Rifle Marksmanship:
1) Marksmanship, An illustrated guide to better shooting by Gary L. Anderson
2) Successful Shooting by Bill Pullum and Frank Hanenkrat
3) Competitive Shooting by A. A. Yur' Yev (An excellent, and by far, the finest in Competitive shooting by a Russian rifle coach translated and published by the N.R.A. Includes pistol).

High Power Service and Match Rifle competition:
1) The Competitive AR 15 (the mouse that roared) by Glen D. Zediker
2) High Power Rifle by (the incomparable) G. David Tubb
3) Black Magic, The Ultra Accurate AR-15 by John Feamster

I hope this helps!

I heard from a friend that there's some "end all be all" marksmanship book out there, the sort of only book you'll ever need from novice to world class marksman... anyone know which that might be?

I for one don't necessarily believe in learning like that, I'd rather have multiple sources of information but to start there wouldn't seem to hurt.

Para's description of "Competitive Shooting by A. A. Yur' Yev" makes me think that may be it, but I really have no idea. I googled and bookmarked every title on your post, thanks para.

I like a good ole military manual...they get right to the point and have some inciteful information in them...the Spicer Illustrated Manual of Sniper Skills also has some good info about the more difficult aspects of hunting and shooting. :)

Another good book is "Prone and Long Range Rifle Shooting" by Nancy Gallagher. You don't have to be a long range shooter to appreciate the topics & fundamentals in her book.

If anyone wants any FMs I have dozens of them and will send a few to any and all who ask, the only request I make is don't ask for them all (I can send about 3-5 in an E-mail). Just PM me with the subject (and the name if you know it) and your E-mail address and I will probably get it to you before the end of the day. :)

I vote for:
Jim Owens' JarHeadTop.com. This site is dedicated to the High Power shooting enthusiast, providing articles, tips, products and instructional material for both the beginner and the veteran shooter.

I'm sure they are all good, but I only have experiance with the Jim Owens books at jarheadtop.com. You can even go on line and read a chapter or 2 for free. The newer versions are on CD and includes additional photos and such. Plus his books are less then 20.00 each which is great.

Finally, they are extemely easy to read and understand. Again I haven't read the other books, but the Jim Owens are great.
