Can you look through the barrel from the breech? (like AK47, AR15, most bolt-action, but not M1 Garand or M14)
If so, then the best bore sighter is your eye. Look through the bore at a target (I use a roof peak about 100 yards away), then look through the scope. Adjust until the bore and the cross-hairs are on target at the same time. That should get you on paper at 50 yds.
Cost: $0.
(I steady the rifle on my dining room table. Do NOT shoot at your neighbor's house to verify zero)
Here's a tip... they don't necessarily go straight down the bore especially the cheapy ones that are meant for several different calibers. I didn't realize this and could never understand why the one I bought was always close but off by about 3 inches to the right @ 100 yards. Then just on a hunch I put a piece of laundry bag over the muzzle and lo and behold the dot was slightly to the right of center. Next time I used it I didn't lock it in the chamber but pushed it about half way in then with a thin dowel I adjusted it so that the dot was centered. I have a piece of reflective tape out in the back yard over the fence and in the woods. Its on a tree about 100 yards away. Great for testing prior to going to the range and now I'm always spot on.
guy at work uses one that chambers into the rifle... it has different sleves to hold the laser thingy. just imagine being able to chamber a laser pointer.
