I went to the Columbus, OH Pro Gun show and picked up a NIB Norinco 1911A1 with 2 mags and brush for $360 OTD from a private table seller. The only thing I noticed that is not exactly GI are the sights which are 3-dot.

As I have read on previous threads, the finish is not impressive, especially on the slide. S/N is 528XXX. This was the second of two that this guy had. The other guy paid the same as me. (I overheard the first guy tell someone what he paid, before I bought mine, but I did not have to bring it up to the seller, he told me about the first purchase honestly.)

I never thought I would buy another 1911, but I wasn't able to make any other deals, so I did this one. I may have paid a little too much, but I keep reading that the supply is drying up, and besides I drove 85 miles to get there and paid $7 to get it, so what's another few hundred? poppy

My experience indicates that you'll probably have a good shooter, unless someone's dinked with it, but you knew goin' in that it wasn't a beauty queen, eh?

poppy, poke around and find 1911Tuner's rediculously exhaustive review... actually, I have it bookmarked, so here it is. It's some good solid information, and it will give you an idea of what to look for in terms of potentially weak components.

The gist of it was that while some of the internals left a good deal to be desired, the Norinco is a good slide and frame, and is a great place to start if you're looking to make yourself a tough, reliable gun at a very reasonable price. I've been rather seriously contemplating doing just that once I get my current project gun up to snuff.

Thanks guys for your responses. I am taking it Wednesday to my buddy's gun club to give it a test run. I'll see how it does against his Kimber Ultra Carry. poppy

Hope you don't shoot Norinco ammo through that heater it will after 500 rounds rip the rifling out of that 1911.
Could you explain more on this? The limited amount of 45acp Norinco and the larger quantity of other calibers seemed ok in most respects. reallya moot point though I guess as no Norinco ammo has been imported really in the last 11 years AFAIK.

The 230grain FMJ Norinco 45acp I have fired seemed to be of normal construction.

I can't say anything about .45 ammo, but I have tried out some of that Chinese AK ammo that I think was Norinco. It came in a yellow box with red lettering, and I think "Ammunition" was misspelled.

The ammo performed just as one would expect. It had a truly hideous rotting urine smell and it was about as accurate as a blunderbuss. I think I quit with that junk after three rounds, and had to let the rifle air out for awhile before I could load up some Wolf and continue. Stay well away from Chinese ammo.

Some people actually seek out the yellow box 7.62x39 as it has a steel core though it is not truly AP. Smelly ammo is by no means a Norinco problem only. Wolf smells as well as Eley and Aguila 22lr. Some Remington bargain 12 ga birdshot also smells a lot like dog poo when fired.

You got a good deal on that Norinco. I love mine and it shoots great.

That was like 9 yrs. ago it messed my colt 1911 and also my CZ 75, had to get a new barrel for both. They were 230 gr. fmj like a brass with another alloy. There rifle ammo was ok it was copper.

Really for Norinco hand gun ammo stay far away

Your right yellow box with red lettering, as for my spelling it sucks I do not read enough any more.:scrutiny: ME!

Bad Ammo

Probably had a mild steel jacket with copper wash. I can see how it would be hard on the rifling in a Colt, etc...but not a Norinco barrel. They're hard chromed inside and out, and a file won't even scratch'em.

Shootcraps...Lookin' at the photo of your Nork has convinced me to order a set of RealIvory stocks for my chromed PimpGun.

Wasn't expecting my thread to take a turn towards ammo discussion, but it has been interesting none the less.

Took my Norinco to the range last night. I thought my buddy was going to bring his Kimber, but he brought his Colt instead and a buddy of his brought his Springfield GI. From a distance I could hardly tell the difference in appearance between the Nork and the Springer, except for the sights.

I ran some Wolf ammo through mine without a hitch and was able to hold my own against the other guys. I can't shoot it as good as my Ruger KP90DC, but then I can't shoot anything better than the Ruger.

It's 1911Tuner's fault that I bought the Nork in the first place; never thought I would buy another 1911, but am happy that I did. :D poppy

You Done Good IMO

I've had my Norinco over 10 years now. It was my first gun and I will never part with it, much to the chagrin of my 'former' best friend that sold it to me for $200 including the Border Patrol leather holster! Just kidding, he is still my friend but only because I willed it to him if I should switch off before him:D I have been tempted to 'tune' it many times but it is my plinker gun and with decent mags, it has never given me any problems. However, I always carry a spray cleaner if I shoot cheap ammo like Magtech. That is some nasty powder, smokes like I'm shooting a black powder muzzle loader!

Yeah....I blame 1911Tuner for the one I bought last night, too. Picked it up in a local pawn shop for $340 OTD. It's #6029xx and has dot sights, also. It also doesn't have the lanyard loop on the mainspring housing. I was really surprised that the breechface has no marks, and neither does the blueing on the feed ramp. I'm hoping to see 1911Tuner in the next few weeks (Charlotte gun show?), and will have him look it over. The outside of this one isn't mint, but the inside sure looks it.

Outside side looks about as good as they come, change the grips and it'll look a lot better :) Not beauty queens.

Congrats on the new gun!

My first 1911 was my Norinco. I put some Chip McCormick parts in it and a full length guide rod. The guide rod really improved the accuracy which may have something to do with the barrel fit. A buddy really wanted it so I sold it to him and then he traded it back(plus cash) when he wanted my 4506.

My thoughts were to put Novak's on it but I think I am going to return it to original and use it in cowboy action "wild bunch" matches.
