It's a Ruger 10/22. The "Deluxe Sporter" version. Hey, I know it's not much. But I hear your first gun is kind of like your first girlfriend and I'm in love. :D

I can't wait to go try it out. It's my first purchase after taking a basic pistol course last weekend. Next up is getting a semi-auto pistol and a concealed handgun permit. But I haven't decided on what pistol I want yet.

Hey man, there's not a thing wrong with the 10/22! Treat it right and don't abuse it, and it'll outlast you. Plus, it's got enough aftermarket accessories to keep you busy for a long, long time.

ya your in trouble. your going to be buying endless amounts of ammo. then your going to want a bigger gun. then more ammo. then another gun then more ammo. Then a bigger gun then more ammo. Then more ammo. then more ammo. then your going to learn that its not hard to reload your own ammo. Then your going to spend all your days off making ammo. Then your going to get addicted to making ammo. To where you want to shoot just to have the brass to reload. Then someone is going to tell you about making your own bullets. Then your going to start casting bullets making ammo. Shooting and shooting and shooting. Then someone is going to let you try there black powder gun. Now your buying muzzle loaders and single action revolvers.

A very NICE purchase. As lots of people will tell you your .22 might prefer one brand of .22 ammunition over others. Best way to find out is buy lots of different brands and try them out. Also it's fun.
 
congrats on your 1st rifle.

wise choice to start with a long gun, and again with the little ruger.

get yourself a 30 dollar wal mart scope if you dont have one yet. then get a spray bottle full of red fruit punch and 5 dollars worth of cheapo ammo.

spray a target with the punch and walk 50 paces and turn around and take aim.

you are now officially black death to the first fly that lands, and remember the snipers creed.

1 shot 1 kill.
 
A fine purchase! Those rugers are a lot of fun to shoot. I would recommend buying a few extra mags so you're not reloading the whole time... but I really think you'll enjoy that rifle. :D
 
I saw 10/22's on sale this weekend and had to control myself not to go buy my fouth one! If you are new to guns I hope someone has told you not to dry fire a 22, you may damage the firing pin. Have fun with your new toy.

Are you sure about this Ray? I've dry fired it a few times, but I checked the manual beforehand. On page 20 of the manual it says:

The rifle can be "dry fired" for practice as long as it is empty and pointed in a safe direction.

Welcome to the wonderful world of firearms. I love my 10/22 and it was my 3rd gun. Get out and enjoy it, and if you can please take somebody that doesn't own a gun or have experience with one and introduce them to it.

Congrats on your first purchase; a Ruger 10/22 was my first gun nearly 30 years ago. Get yourself a decent scope (one that's made for a .22LR rifle), stock up on ammo (mine has always had a marked prference for CCI MiniMags), and plenty of magazines (never know when a high capacity mag ban will come back again). And enjoy.
 
The 10/22 is a great one to start with. My son and I shot ours the other day. Thare a million accessories for it as well. Great guns.
 
Welcome to the group, BigStick. My first was a 10/22 as well (boy, she gets around! :)) and you can't go wrong with this one. It's a great gun to learn your skills on, shoots reliably, cleans easily and you can shoot her all day without breaking the bank. If you're new to shooting, take at least one basic course to learn the fundamentals of shooting and basic safety rules (the store you buy from oughta have some recommendations). If you're able, shoot as many weapons as you can in as many calibers as you can. Pick your first gun by how well it fits your hand, how comfortable the round is to shoot, and how well you can afford the ammo for regular practice--not by how "cool" it looks, how big it is, or what some elite military guy uses (I've seen lots of new guys at the range w/ guns they couldn't shoot well because they chose these last criteria).

Good first pick, you're now a full fledged American! ;) Find out what ammo she favors and stock up on a few bricks on econo stuff too. If you really get into shooting, try and master the 10/22 before just collecting any stuff if you move that way. Be safe - drill the 4 rules into yourself, family, and friends & have fun.
 
Welcome to your new addicition! I bought each of my 3 sons a 10/22; great gift!!

The Ruger 22 models (22/45 or Mark III) are also excellent choices for robust and reliable pistols. The 22 Ruger revolver is another great choice.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the shooting sports. I have heard that the real test of a man's intelligence is how often he agrees with you. You must be a pretty sharp fellow. I've got two DSP 10/22's myself.

It's like drugs and redneck food .... You just can't seem to get enough :D
 
Congratulations! Everyone needs at least one .22 rifle in the stable. The real bonus is that you can still shoot until you're tired for a reasonable amount of $$$ with .22. Enjoy it!
