Hey guys - I've got an old Savage 340 I'm looking to restock. I picked it up a couple years ago for $100 and it shoots fine but the stock has seen better days :) (not to mention even when new the stocks on these guns are pretty ugly).

Anyways, I was deciding between Boyds and Richards Microfit. I've got a Richards on another gun - love that stock, and they're the cheaper option, but the wait time is long and I know those do take a bit of work to fit.

Has anyone put a Boyds stock on one of these rifles? If so how much work was there fitting the action to the stock? Also, I thought I'd read that the "notch" in the trigger guard isn't relieved on the Boyds stock for this gun. Is this true? Just wondering as if so I'll probably pay the extra and get it unfinished. I don't want to have to sand in a notch and then try to match the original finish.

Thanks for any info offered!

Ive used boyds stocks on other rifles, but not owning a 340 (want one) I havent on that model yet. Neither of my boyds stocks needed any fitting on my guns, they were both ready to bed n go. id be surprised if they didnt have the stock ready for the action right off the bat, it is possible tho.

Thanks. After a bit more research I found out that the Boyds stock is officially for the 340E - and the "E" version had a straight trigger guard without the "notch" cut, which is why it's not relieved for that.

From the sounds of it I just need to sand in the notch and it should be good to go.

"...to sand in the notch..." That'll take you 100 years. Use a wood rasp or go to a machine shop with exact dimensions.
Boyds stock are for short receivers only as well. So the chambering will matter.
Gunparts Part #704470 is a 340 LATE MODEL Drop-In Replacement w/Low Luster Lacquer Finish & Butt plate for $96. Fits models with a curved trigger guard.

Long.
Short was for .22Hornet, .222,.223
There were even a few chambered for .225Win. (Long).

Had one in .30/30. Shot good, but thought it crude. Sold for something else.

Yeah looking around at the OAL's for the rounds it was chambered for I had kinda pegged it as long. Kinda bummed now as I had ordered the stock a few hours ago and despite them being "backlogged" so their normal 7-14 day production time may take longer - the customer service rep won't cancel the order. Regardless of the outcome it has me soured on them. If they can't cancel an order made less than 6 hours ago that's 2 weeks or more from shipping out it's just not worth it for me to deal with them.

Well thats crap! Ive never delt with boyds beyond basic ordering.

Theres a market for those im sure, if push come to shove toss it on ebay or gb.

I think you will be alright with that stock after you file/sand the notch in the bottom of the stock for the magazine. While it is true that the 30/30 or 225 Win (2.5" OAL) are longer than the 223 the difference in the OAL of the cartridges is only .25". I have never heard or seen a Savage 340 designated as long or short action, all the cartridges listed for the Savage 340 fall into the short action category by Remington and Savage and encompass cartridges from .223 to .308.
From Boyds site for the 340E stock; Center to Center of Action Screws: 6 25/32". Which is @6.78" or a hair over 6 3/4", if your stock measures that you are good to go after you do the notches
Please post a follow up after you get the stock, I have a friend who is thinking of restocking his Sav 340 in 30/30 and would also need to file the notches in tthe bottom. Which style stock did you order?
Which calibers are long action and which are short action?

I ordered the classic style. It's listed on the site as short action however there is no long action listed.

I took my action out of my stock however my calipers bottom out around 6" so I had to take the measurement with a tape measure which as you can image is far less precise, but depending on how I'm holding it looks like around 6 1/2" to 6 3/4" - which if anything sounds like my action is too short, rather than too long.

At this point I'm just going to check and see if the action lines up when it gets here (which will apparently be sooner than expected - I got a tracking # yesterday). If not - I may look at ebay to get rid of it, otherwise if I can make it fit I'll post an update here.

Got the stock in Monday and have been playing around with it. I think it will work.

As noted earlier I'm having to rasp/sand in the "magazine grab" notch for the trigger guard to set down into. Started that with a half-round rasp I have and have been finishing up with some sand paper wrapped around a dowel, but I realized about half way through I need to go slightly larger so I need to go grab a wider dowel from the hardware store.

There's definitely no trouble with the action length being too long. Everything lined up ok but it's not quite a drop in. I had a relieve a little wood around the barrel nut and the recoil lug cutout is about 1/8" too shallow which is creating a pivot point there and makes the action rock back and forth a bit. I'll get to that in the next day or so.

Other issues (not show stoppers) are that the rear trigger guard screw hole doesn't line up (it's about 3/16" too far back) - since the stock is intended for a 340E (mine is a 340C) and that variant uses a different trigger guard that's understandable. Since that screw doesn't attach to the action and just anchors into the wood I'm going to fill it and redrill a new hole. The filled portion will be covered up when the trigger guard is attached anyways so it won't be visible.

Also, the screw hole for the barrel band screw is SIGNIFICANTLY shallower (on my original stock the screw sits flush with the handguard - on this stock the screw hole is counter-sunk nearly a half an inch). The barrel band screw bottoms out and there's still play where the barrel can lift up and down slightly. Again - with this stock being cut for a 340E, I think that's the problem. The 340E barrel band screw is listed at 0.93" on Numrich - the standard model barrel band screw is listed at 1.19". Since they have the shorter screw in stock I'm probably just going to order that from them. Looking online it also says that the barrel band and front trigger guard screw are both standard 1/4" 28TPI screws, so I may try to find a stainless steel machine screw that will fit. With it being recessed I doubt it will look out of place.

Thanks for the follow up. Good to hear that your stock will work with a little modification.
