Updated: 5:32 p.m. ET Feb. 5, 2005NEW YORK - A woman and her fiance were gunned down on a busy Manhattan street in a brazen shooting that investigators believe was committed by the woman’s ex-husband, who then turned the gun on himself.
Inessa Ivanov, 39, was killed and John Turco, 56, was critically wounded in the Friday evening shooting at Madison Avenue and 57th Street, police said. The area is known for its posh shopping, including nearby stores Hermes, Burberry and Chanel.
Vadim Ivanov, 43, the alleged gunman, was found nearby, mortally wounded with a pistol in his lap and binoculars police believe were used to track the victims, police said.
Turco was taken to Cornell Weill Medical Center in critical condition, police said. A hospital spokesman on Saturday declined to release any information about Turco’s condition but provided a statement from his family thanking police and ambulance personnel for saving Turco’s life.
Inessa Ivanov had just left her job at the Frederic Fekkai beauty salon on 57th Street when the shooting took place, published reports said. A woman who answered the phone at the salon Saturday declined to comment.
Michelle Broderick, who works in the General Motors Building on 58th Street, told Newsday she heard nine to 12 shots, saw people running and then noticed two people lying on the ground.
“I’ve never heard gunfire before,†Broderick said. “It’s very unnerving. I usually feel very safe in this neighborhood.€
