Brazen shooting leaves two dead in Manhattan
Woman, fiance gunned down; police suspect woman's ex-husband
The Associated Press
Updated: 5:32 p.m. ET Feb. 5, 2005NEW YORK - A woman and her fiance were gunned down on a busy Manhattan street in a brazen shooting that investigators believe was committed by the woman’s ex-husband, who then turned the gun on himself.

Inessa Ivanov, 39, was killed and John Turco, 56, was critically wounded in the Friday evening shooting at Madison Avenue and 57th Street, police said. The area is known for its posh shopping, including nearby stores Hermes, Burberry and Chanel.

Vadim Ivanov, 43, the alleged gunman, was found nearby, mortally wounded with a pistol in his lap and binoculars police believe were used to track the victims, police said.

Turco was taken to Cornell Weill Medical Center in critical condition, police said. A hospital spokesman on Saturday declined to release any information about Turco’s condition but provided a statement from his family thanking police and ambulance personnel for saving Turco’s life.

Inessa Ivanov had just left her job at the Frederic Fekkai beauty salon on 57th Street when the shooting took place, published reports said. A woman who answered the phone at the salon Saturday declined to comment.

Michelle Broderick, who works in the General Motors Building on 58th Street, told Newsday she heard nine to 12 shots, saw people running and then noticed two people lying on the ground.

“I’ve never heard gunfire before,†Broderick said. “It’s very unnerving. I usually feel very safe in this neighborhood.€

but I thought gun laws were designed to keep guns out of the hands of the bad guys? why didn't he follow the law??

oh, wait. I guess the definition of bad guy is that they like to break the law. silly me.

The idiot anti-gun crowd doesn't care. After all, it is for the children!!! Dumbest reason ever!

If I were a criminal, I'd move directly to New York City and feast on the bountiful supply of irredeemably naive victims.

Ridiculous. The reason she's never heard gunfire is probably because she has never been to any of NYC's danger zones. I heard gunfire from outside of my hotel window the very first night I visited NYC.

WOW! I was over on 57th and Park just around the corner earlier in the day. As we all know New York City is safe because it is illegal to carry a gun there. That order of protection was not worth the paper it was written on. Just watch the sheeple cry for more gun control. God help us and protect us from the misguided!

My first trip into the city in almost a year. Sheesh!!!

I just got some interesting background info on the "heroes" of this real life drama from a friend. The friend's parents happen to be neighbors of the murdered woman, they have known both her and the (ex)husband (the murderer) pretty closely for years. They are in a state of shock (the mother at least) and say they couldn't imagine anything like that could happen with these people.
Just goes to show you that all bets are off when it comes to the crimes of passion, were jealousy is involved... BTW, according to the friend (who is female), the murderer was "a gorgeous looking guy who was obviously very much in love with himself". I guess that was his downfall, he just couldn't live with the knowledge that his wife could leave him and be happy with another man...

Alex.
