I'm looking at picking up a Browning Hi Power. Is there anything I should be on the look out for as far as a used Hi Power goes? Or is a CZ a better idea?

For the most part there's nothing special to look out for in the BHP vrs any other used pistol. The external appearance of a handgun generally gives you a good clue as to how "used" it is. Look for the obvious things like rust, home gunsmithing. Make sure all the safties operate properly. THe BHP being a gun that's been around for a long time and a service firearm for the military of several countries makes it easy to fine compotent gunsmiths that could fix any small problems that may arise. Parts both new and aftermarket are plentiful for the BHP.

The CZ is a good pistol but for the most part has only recently arrived in the US. As a former Comunist Block gun the availability of accessories like holsters, stocks, magazines, is much more limited than the BHP.

Some people like everything about the HiPower except the magazine disconnect and the trigger.
On the trigger I can say two things:
It is better than any Glock and people shoot that accurately.
They improve with use, so if there is more than one and the other stuff checks out, you may want to dry fire a few to find the one with the better trigger.
A CZ gives you more for the money, but I think it doesn't point quite as well as a HiPower. Good gun, costs less, but I prefer the HiPower.

I own two BHPs, and FM from Argentina, and a Practical.
I bought the FM new and the Practical used.
Both shoot about as well, although the Practical has a better finish and looks nicer.

I've seen several other BHPs for sale locally and not seen any that had problems. I'd be careful of the Inglis models made in Canada during World War II. Some of them were shipped to China and had a hard life.

CDNN from San Antonio, TX has 17 round magazines from South Africa, if you want to raise the capacity above the standard 13 round mags.

I have read Mr. Camp's site with pleasure. Lots of good BHP info there. He also has a book on the BHP available.

The Browing Hi-Power is my favorite 9MM pistol(and no i do not want to start a spitting contest here) and I find it to be the most natural pointing pistol I have ever shot. With decent ammo, and slim design, it is a great carry and home defense pistol. Only problem is the magazine disconnect, I dont like it and removed it from both my guns. It actually improves your trigger pull when removed and is very easy to do if you are familiar with your gun. JMHO

It's a tough call between the Browning Hi-Power and the CZ. I've shot them both and like them both. Either one will serve you well.

I agree with loadedround that the HP is the best 9mm around. Take out the mag. disconnect and throw on a pair of Hogue grips and the gun is just about perfect.

I really love the feel of my FN Hi power, I just can't get used to the lack or a reset click on the trigger reset. otherwise I love the size, it conceals very well for a full framed gun.

I bought a FN model with adjustable sights in the mid 70's. I would avoid the sights they are weak. The gun has about a 6lb trigger pull and is the best big bore auto I have as far as concealbility, accuracy, and dependability. They are great guns.

'73 BHP

I have to agree with Loadedround. I have a '73 BHP and it is a great point and shoot weapon. Always dead on the target a little to the right of the bullseye, getting that problem adjusted. It is a great weapon but a little picky on the ammo.
