Have a buck mark that shoots the 1st round just fine.
The 2nd round, while loaded, and hammer cocked, acts like the safety is on.
Manually cycle a new round or remove/insert the magazine and it fires like the 1st, but repeats.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Welcome to THR!

Are the two screws on the top rail fully tightened? I'm betting that one or both have worked themselves lose.

Might be the disconnector. It moves up & down from contact with the slide. It connects the trigger to the sear. If the disconnector sticks in the down position, the gun will not fire.

Yes, all screws are secure.
I will check the disconnector -- is is a fixable item, or replacement required?

Thanks!

The disconnecter is replaceable.

But it is very doubtful yours is bad.

It is more likely gummed up with powder fouling.

A good cleaning & lube will probably fix it.

Look under the right grip for it.
Parts #4 Disconnecter & #6 Spring here:

Be sure and clean & lube the underside of the slide where the disconnecter notch is too.

The diconnector is fixable. Just make sure if moves up and down freely. Its a common piece that can bind if coming in contact with grips or if very dirty. Make sure after firing the first shot, the trigger moves back to fully forward. This resets the disconnector to the sear so it will fire again.

Its not uncommon for Buckmark owner's to "lose" the disconnector during cleaning, maintenance, etc. If you "lose" yours, the gun can fire with or without a magazine inserted.

It's been cleaned & lubed in all the right places.

Regarding the trigger -- it does go fully forward -- this only happens when FIRED, if I insert a few dummy rounds, pull the trigger (striker released), cycle the slide, pull the trigger and the striker is released again. If using live rounds, the 2nd round (which was automaitcally loaded) won't be fired.

Are you sure the hammer is cocked when trying to fire the 2nd round? If the trigger pull is light or poor sear engagement, the hammer may follow the slide down. Has gun ever doubled, firing 2 or more with 1 pull of the trigger? Other wise, i dont know.

Yes, hammer is cocked.
After a bit of poking around, it appears the disconnector bar is getting 'stuck' part way down. A jar to the pistol (light tap, removal, reinsert mag, manual cycle) and I can see the disconnector bar pop up again. It's not the mag-safety holding it down; but it appears to get stuck. I have cleaned the lower receiver, disconnector bar, and inner grip;and it continues to get stuck.

I'm going to use some jewelers polish & see if polishing the grip plate & disconnector help. There seems to be some wear on the grip plate, so maybe the disconnector bar has a bit of a bend or roughness to it.

Say what??

If you lose the disconnecter in any handgun, it cannot be fired at all, because the trigger could not / would no longer be connected to the sear.

Maybe something could be lost, but it sure isn't gonna fire without that part!

I think he meant the wire (rod) for the mag safety; which appears to be a cause for some for failure to fire...

If you look at the bar, V shaped spring and slot for it in the frame, obviously with the grip off, you'll notice that the V shaped spring is about 1/4 " shorter than the V shaped groove for the spring... At least it is on my wife's Buckmark. If the spring sits in the bottom, the trigger won't reset even though it's still 'in contact'. Putting the V shaped spring in the top portion of the V shaped groove, with the gap at the bottom of the spring, allowed the gun to function and trigger to reset.

I noticed that this spring is particularly weak, and I'd like it to reset a little more positively.
