I know that firearms such as the Serbu Super shorty are considered AOW and transfer on a $5 stamp. But I want to make my own. Ive got a few old 870s laying around. Do I just send in a F1 with a check for 5 bucks and wait for the stamp, then begin my build?

Would the sacrificial shotgun need to be originally a factory PGO? Or once I had my AOW stamp it wouldnt matter what the shotgun was in its previous life?

Im familiar with the process as I built my SBR on a form 1 and I handled all the paperwork myself so good to go there. I also am quite a handy gunsmith so the bases are covered there too.

Making an AOW = $200 tax stamp
Transfering an AOW = $5 tax stamp

In order for a shotgun to be made into an AOW, the shotgun must never had a shoulder stock attached.
Factory PGO "cruiser" type shotguns that never had a shoulder stock attached to it are used by 07-FFL/02-SOT to make AOWs.

If the shotgun had a shoulder stock attached to it, it would have to be a SBS not an AOW.

Tertiary question:

If you manufacture an AOW out of, say, a Mossberg Cruiser, can you then bolt a full stock on, or does that turn it into a SBS?

That, my friend, would be an SBS for sure.

For some reason I already knew this, guess I was just afraid of the answer.

What 870 came factory PGO?

Building an AOW is the same $200 as building an SBS. If you're really wanting to do the build, why not go the SBS route and give yourself the option of putting a stock on it later?

You need to ask either Serbu Firearms or Safety Harbor Firearms, since both of them make AOWs from Remington 870s.

The Remington 870MCS with breacher grip is transfered as an AOW.
But, the Remington 870MCS with shoulder stock or with weapons mount or with full kit is transfered as a SBS.

I agree.

But, the OP could live in a state where SBSs are illegal but AOWs are legal (such as WA) or in a live in a state where it is easier to legally obtain an AOW than a SBS (such as CA).

Yup.....

Nope......Mississucky.....I mean Mississippi. We can have whatever we want and the local CLEO has no problem approving Form 1s.
