In regard to the bulk bullets sold by Remington and Winchester in .224,are bullets such as Hornady 53 grain HP that much more accurate than a Renington 55 HP? I do not shoot competetion but have an H BAR for personal target shooting. The distance of the shot is about 100 yards. Thanks, Byron

FWIW The best bulk bullet for the 223 is the Remington 50gr PLHP. It can be had for less then 80 per K from some places. I have a load with surplus AA2200 that is a good shooting load! With that said if you want something sexier so to speak, you can find good deals on VMax 250ct boxes that would get you a K for about 100 bucks.

Unless you are VERY good,

the bulk bullets will be fine for 100 yd target shooting. Try the IMI 55 and 62 grain bullets from Midway, Grafs, Wideners, etc. Heck, the Barnaul (Russian) stuff is not bad for what you're doing. ;)

In the sale flyers Midway has "Varmint Packs". IIRC they're pretty cheap. I'd think they'd be fine for 100 yards. Haven't tried them. Maybe they're listed under "Dogtown"...Don't remember exactly. Can't find a catalog right now

I suspect that' if you're just standing up and wailing away, they'd be more accurate than you can hold. If you're doing long range ultra competition, then maybe something more pricey would be justified

If they're good enough for prarie dogging at 300-400 yards, they'll probably hit whatever you want.

I shot this 100yd group using bulk pack Hornady 55 gr spire points, around $50 a thousand from Midway.

G56;

You measure your groups different from the way I do. That would not in any way make .476" the way I measure (center to center). That looks more like about .764", assuming it's a 2" target dot, and center ring is 1".

A .476" group is essentially a "one hole" group with a .224" bullet, assuming 5 shots in close proximinity. That is unless those are .177" diameter bullets. A friends .17 Remington would shoot half-inch groups that looked like that, on a 1" target dot.

(Not trying to start a flame war, just my irrelavent observation)

As to the original question: I've found considerable variation from lot#'s to lot #'s, such that it is impossible to say which bulk bullets are best.

I had one "batch" of 1,000 Hornady's (55gr S.Pt) that would group "half-inch" through three different .223's I shot them through. I now have the remnants of another that shoots 1.75" at BEST ! They have exceedingly deep cannulures on them, so I attribute that to why they "won't shoot".

I had a "batch" of Winchester 55gr Soft Pt. that through my Bushmaster AK-shorty with an ultracompact 6x scope, would routinely shoot groups identical to that posted above by g56. Even better through a Remington m788 I had at the time. In my observations, the Hornady's are usually a little better, on average, though

Wish I had gotten about 10,000 of that lot# of Winchesters, though!!!

You get what you get!

I've gotten bad bullets in bulk, and good bullets. Usually the latter.

I've seen similar results in Remington 115gr JHP's I get in bulk. The 2,000rd batch I've got now, will shoot 1.25" at 50yds through my three S&W Perf. CTR 9's. Some lots have shot 4" or worse, though the bad lot's are rare. I've ended up sorting some, by weighing, or other means to sort them out. Usually though, there will be some visual differences, or weight differences that you can spot.

When you get a bad batch though, its tough !!!!
You just have to find a way to utilize them, such as short range work, or, throw them in the melting pot, and make cast bullets from them !!!

If his pic is actual size, then it measures almost exactly .476", center-to-center. .764" is the approximate gross group measurement, not center-to-center. Subtract .224" from the gross measurement to get accurate center-to-center measurement.

I have fired some of the Winchester 55gr FMJBT, and I havent been too impressed with them. I have since fired some of the Hornady 68 gr BTHP Match bullets, and I am liking these very much.

I have had very similar results to G56's. I use 25.5 gr 2230-c with the hornady 55sp and get them all touching at 100yrds. Im using a 1-8 twist Heavy AR barrel. For me the 2230c has shot just as welll as any other I have tried for 100yds anyway. Its cheap because it is pulled surplus powder if I remember correctly. I think Im going to give the data 73 powder a swing while its cheap. Worst case senario, I have alot of powder to plink with and whats wrong with that?

I have also picked up some hornady 60gr sp on sale from midway for 6$ 100. We will see if the longer bullets do even better in this twist rate.

It's a 1 1/2" target dot, .476" center to center, method was to measure the outside of the group, and subtract .224" to get the center to center group size. The rifle is an AR15 with a 24" stainless bull barrel, 1-8 twist, the upper was from J&T Distributing on a Stag Arms lower receiver.

AA2230C is new bulk military powder, not pull down.
