Bullet/Case Separation

I was at the range testing some 9mm reloads. Everything was going good. I noticed after one of my shots that the slide failed to advance all the way forward. I looked down and there in the ejection port was a case and bullet that had broken apart. There was gun powder all over the inside of the ejection port and chamber. I packed up my stuff and went home.

What would likely be the cause of this, bullet not seated deep enough, not enough crimp, too much crimp, something else?

Taper Crimp has little to nothing to do with making the bullet fit tight.

Not enough case neck tension after sizing & expanding is most likely.

Not seated deep enough? Could be?
But it is very very unlikely if they fit in the magazine at all.

I had a identical problem a while back while shooting my Hi Power. Hasn't happen since. I assumed it was old brass that wasn't elastic enough to take the taper crimp. It was S&B brass and it may have been one that sneaked in when I was cleaning up my firing line. Don't know.

Ron James,
You may have attempted reloading one of the brass coated steel S&B cases. I check all the 9mm S&B cases which I pick up with a magnet.

What specific bullet and case were you loading?

S&B steel case, I didn't even know S&B made steel cases but that would explain it. 9MM,124 Gr. FMJ, don't remember the load and too lazy to go and look it up The force of cambering the round threw the bullet into the chamber and the powder just spilled out. I try and check all my reloads but that one sliped by.
