A Sebastapol (CA) man shot and wounded one of the two men who broke into his home early thursday morning, apparently to steal his medical marijuana, authorites said.

Kit Hartwell told Sonoma County sheriff's deputies that he fired a shotgun at a man who climbed through a bathroom window.

Alesandro Altizen, 22, was arrested after he sought treatment at a nearby hospital a short time later. Altizen underwnet surgery for a wound to his right shoulder, authorities said.
Also arrested was David Daniel, 22, who accompanied Altizen to the hospital. Investigators believe Altizen and Daniel were trying to break into Hartwell's home to steal marijuana plants. About 30 plants are growing at the home, according to sheriff's deputies. Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Freitas said hartwell has a physician's permission to use marijuana for medical reasons. He said Hartwell wouldn't face any charges in connection with the shooting.

I wonder what hartwell used... I'm sure we'd all like to think it was that trusty 870. He only underwent surgery? You mean.... his arm isn't completely blown off? I wonder what kind of load he was using? Did he mean to hit him directly or just a little of the spray??... so many questions.

There'd be less of it, but people still hold up liquor stores, don't they?

I used to work at a liquor/wine store. It's mostly a cash business and open late. Also most that are hit are in areas where it is easier to get away or LE is weak at. I wouldn't draw this as a similar situation.

Capone and others got rich because alcohol was banned.

Crime follows illegal and banned substances. Make it readily available, inexpensive, taxed, and violent crime goes away.

The only problem with this scenario would be that the jails would be less crowded, the court system would be less backlogged, and a lot of LEO types from many different agencies wouldn't have anything to do, and billions of $ could be spent elsewhere. (Drug addicts are here whether it's legal or not.)

Langenator,

It does seem a bit much, but then we don't know how much the guy uses, how much a plant produces for him, etc...
1. Remember, the guy is growing his entire supply.
2. They probably count immature plants as well, which do have losses.
3. Different plants&growing methods grow to different sizes. He might be using smaller plants.
4. Some reading revealed that certain parts of the female plants are the most desirable. You can only tell male and female apart when they bud.
5. He might only grow them certain times of the year.

My ref:Link

Then again, he could be distributing, whether illegaly or to other medical users. Even if he's illegally distributing doesn't negate that he defended himself. (Of course, you all know my stance on the drug war :D )

Oh well, it's all incalculable unless we know how many doses per plant, and how often he doses.
