Hey guys Im selling my buddy my quad rail and he gave me the hand guards off his Bushmaster. They are the correct length but wont seat in the ring. I think the part that goes into the ring is to thick. Is this some common knowledge that I didnt know? I assumed (yeah I know) the hand guards would be the same as my 6520.

So am I going to have to buy Colt hand guards? Are there any others that you know fit? Thanks.

Yeah, my understanding is that Colt has a slightly different front hand guard cap on carbines. For instance, if you go to buy a MI #17 rail they offer a separate model for Colts.

Colt likes to play games, and that is one of their classic ones. "Whats that? You want new handguards? Okay! but, you have to give your money to us, since it is going on our gun..."

They do the same with their lower parts and pins, partly to "keep it from being converted to full-autp", when I would wager that it is just to keep all of the money that you put into the rifle going to them.

Ok C-Grunt please ignore the misinformation in this thread.

First off, Colt Uses standard Pins in all their guns now.
They also use standard Caps for the rails. I can move a DI rail or handguards from a Colt to a BM to a RRA to a Noveske and it will fit every one.

There is not a Non standard part on a New Colt.

His gun seems to argue against you.

lol, the op is telling us his handgaurds wont fit.

are you telling him "yes they do"?

copy and paste from bravo company:

There are currently two Carbine #17 models available. Because Colt uses a slightly different shaped handguard cap, there is a model #17 for carbine uppers other than Colt, and a model #17C for Colt carbine uppers.
If your upper is not a Colt product, please order a MI#17.

edit: sorry kw, i didnt see that you knew about that too. apoligies.

I didn't say it would fit in his case, I said current production guns aren't any different. That doesn't mean he didn't have a problem on his. I just tested a set of Standard handguards and took the Troy DI rail off my RRA and mounted them with no problem on my 6920. I guess there are some handguards that have problems but I had not seen them before.

Could it be that Colt only makes mil-spec hand-guards, and Bushy doesn't?

Naw! Shirley not!

I went and found some milspec hand guards. They are the wide kind (car??) not the skinny ones that came with the rifle.

Just out of curiosity, what are the measurements of the cap, and the two hand guard sets?

Just for comparison, the M4 hand guards off my CMMG upper measured 1.5" across at the front and 1.75" at the back. The lips were 3/16" wide with relief cuts at 3,6,9 and 12 o'clock on the front and at 6 and 12 on the back. Those are the only ones I had handy to measure. Would be interesting to see some numbers from other peoples Colt and non-Colt carbine hand guards.
