I really like my Romy 58 SKS. I am new to the rifle thing. I am a revolver guy from way back.

With all the changes in govt, shtf scenarios, and gun / ammo prices what they are...and the limited supply of SKSs; I want to buy 2 SKSs and put them up for my boys (7 and 3).

My fear is they wont be around when they are grown or even legal to buy.

Yugos and Norincos seem to be the only abundant choice right now.

What do you think?

I see no problems with this as eventually they will be called "pre-ban" and eventually go up in value. Don't forget the ammo.
I'm sure they are high right now, but what is the going price if you don't mind?

Going price is $250 - $500. Some have posted on here that they have seen some for $600.

Samco Global has Yugos for $260...but the site says you can only buy one and not even sure if they are in stock.

Not a bad idea, but don't pay too much money. I suspect we are in a gun bubble which may pop, with a decrease in prices.

You might wish to buy 7.62 saiga rifles instead of a sks rifles. They have detachable 10 round mags instead of a fixed mag. The saiga could be altered later to a real ak format with a pistol grip, and the ability to take hicap mags. Just a thought.

The best SKS are always said to be Russians, and two (only saw their very good external appearance) were listed here at the last couple of gun shows for about $425 each.

If our new Wash DC leaders want their Congressmen to get re-elected in less than two years, they will tread very quietly on this subject.

What laws have they recently tried to pass? What executive orders against guns or ammo have been signed by our new President?
"Hold on a minute, everybody says that they are going to...{fill in the blank}..and......"

But what have they done or seriously tried to pass?
Maybe this is not just a lucky coincidence?

Everyone says to go ahead and buy the ammo... but the reason I want the SKS is the prolific 762*39 ammo. I mean the AK (762*39) is the most prolific gun out there. It stands to reason that the ammo will be available.

Sure. It's a nice gift now, probably a GREAT gift in 15 years.
Same with AK47s. To some extent, the run up in both AK47 and SKS prices has nothing whatsoever to do with politics. It has to do with the fact that there are now far fewer rifles being introduced into the system. Three years ago, there were pallets and pallets of unbuilt AK47 kits waiting to be sold. Now there are none through the major retail sellers. Three years ago, you could get SKSs and AK47s the same way you can get mosin nagents today.... $100 a pop.

Personally, I think it makes sense to get old military rifles at cheap prices. I think it is fun to shoot a piece of cold-war or WWII history. I just wish I had been around when good M1 Garands were cheap.

I say do it, and buy a minimum of 2 sealed cases of ammo now while you can...

Yo never know what tomorrow may bring--

I guess what my goal is...is to buy guns that will have ammo readily available. 762*39 seems to be a pretty universal round. If I have to buy the ammo now, will they be useless in 20 years?

Useless in 20 yrs, hardly. I say more usefull. There is a bubble right now, but will it pop? We have strong opposition to 2A rights in guvmint right now. My guess is that they are scared to make their move just this moment.

7.62 X39 isn't so plentiful right now, and stupidly expensive. I hope that'll change soon, after this ammo hording craze stops. The availability and cheapness of the ammo was half the reason I bought mine in the first place.

I just got a Yugo SKS for my son in law.

Nice trade!

Yes, grab some now to put away. They've gone up steadily, there are plenty of us who wish we had bought more when they were selling for $79. Hard to pick a favorite, I have Russian, Yugo, Romy, Albanian, Chinese, and Egyptian examples.

Consider that all Chinese ammo is no more (ex. order I believe?) and the same can happen to all other foreign ammo (esp. Russian). And granted, the US manufacturers would gladdly pick up the slack, maybe even go the cheaper steel case route if all foreign ammo is no longer available. They would be starting this venture largely from scratch. They may stick with the more costly brass. It may have to be the B.S. "green" by then (shelf life?). And even if they go the cheapest route, it will still (probably) cost more per unit than anything the Russians have done.
This foreign caliber can be cut off like any other, as a mil. caliber it could be outlawed (Mexico, several Euro and other countries, that "sporting claws" text in the Constitution may bite us again) if the effers go that route.
I am definitely NOT trying to discourage you from buying a couple of very stashable SKS's or AK's (have a half dozen AK's myself), just pointing out some things to consider.
Not saying what will happen, just remembering what has happenned.
And I second the previously mentioned issues with current availability of ammo. There are more than a few non-conspiracy news items contributing to the current and probable future availability of all ammo.

sporting claws" text in the Constitution may bite us again

Please enlighten us as to what that clause might be?

Supply and demand, people. I could definitely see the Obamination cutting off all imports of ammo, but if he does there are enough SKS's and AK's in this country that someone will start producing more of it domestically to meet that demand. It probably won't be as cheap as the Russian imported stuff, but 7.62x39 isn't going anywhere.

Not to be misunderstood as there is no such thing as a sporting "anything" within any founding documents (otherwise just a bad play on words on my part). Forgive me, I was only mockingly referencing "their" basic proclaimed rationale for doing what they do.
As to supply and demand, I thought I made that point, somewhat. And like you, am hoping for exactly such a thing if/when the need arises (considering my own previously mentioned investment in the caliber).

Go ahead. The 762x39, if it is banned for importation, will cost as much as the WWB and other domestic ammo in 5.56. You won't be any worse off, from an ammo cost position, than any AR owner.

(So can an SKS.)

Not really, you don't improve an SKS by trying to make it what it is not but the Saiga you can improve by turning it back into what it was supposed to be. I would agree get a Saiga instead.

Brass cased 7/62x39 cost more than 223 ammo...research before making comments.

Buying guns now for your children is a very smart idea, IMO. I did the same thing...I bought two AR15s for my wife and for our unborn first child. You never know what the availability will be in the future, so if you can afford it...buy as much as you can now. That way you won't be whinning like plenty of folks on the forums are doing when it comes to firearm and ammo prices.

I did.
I have two sons so I have two M1 Garands and two M1 Carbines. But the rifles are mine until the boys can take them away from me. ;)

I did it!!!

Just got two Russian Tula SKS (one is stamped 1955 on the receiver cover, the other has the star on the receiver, can be seen on the left towards the rear of the ejection port, indicating a late 55 or 56). from the importer, for 200 bucks each, Canadian.

They do not have the arsenal refurb stamp but the blueing looks new. Matching numbers on receiver, gas tube, magazine, receiver cover, bolt carrier, stocks.

All the corners are sharp, the bolt and carrier are in the white and polished with no obvious signs of breech face and rail groove wear. Bores are dazzling and rifling deep.

One stock is birchwood, the other laminate and both look really clean as the butt plates have absolutely no scratches. I heard that the laminate stocks were replacements.

There are very faint or no wear arcs from the disassembly levers on the rear pin and on the rear sight body.

I hope my grandson and future grandsons will be as happy as yours truly when they inherit these beauties.
