Saw an ad on gunbroker for a handgun I'm interested in, and the seller lives in my town. I emailed him and asked him if he's interested in doing a FTF sale.
His reply:

It would have to be at my FFL dealer So he can do the transfer. He is also displaying it at his gun shop.

So I ask him what a transfer entails...

There will be no extra charge to you. It is like purchasing a new hand gun. There is a 3 day wait from the time of purchase till you can take it unless you have a concealed permit than you can take it the same day. The gun would be registered to you. At this time it is registered to me. All the laws of purchasing a hand gun apply.

Now I am really confused. I thought there was no gun registration in FL, and you could sell handguns private party. I ask him this and his next message:

When you purchase a gun new it is registered through a FFL to you. When you sell the gun private party the gun is still registered to the original
purchaser. If I sell the gun I would want the registration to be taken off
my name. The registering FFL makes a phone call and a background check is
made on the purchaser. As long as no criminal records are found and the new
owner is of age and a US citizen the process is completed and you become
the new owner of the registered gun. If a crime is ever committed with this
weapon they would go to the registered name on file for information.

Is there really handgun registration in FL, or is he mistaken?

Age requirements:

Buying a handgun from a dealer: 21
Buying a handgun private party: 18

Is that correct?

yes alex that is correct. all the trade would consist of is you giving him the money and him giving you the gun.

and there is definitely no registration in florida.

I'd think that having a signed receipt along w/Loandr.'s idea of showing ID. to be a good idea.

But then again, all my handguns are registered w/my State.:barf:

Many people are paranoid of selling a firearm FTF as a private sale, then having that firearm turn up having been used in a crime. They're (justifiably)afraid of being accused of the crime, if the police do manage to trace it's serial number back to them.

That being said, some folks insist that all firearms sales do go through an FFL. His gun. You want to buy it, you jump through his hoops.

He's treating the 4473 as registration. It a way it is, but even if he sold it to you without going through a dealer, all he'd have to do to cover his butt is photocopy your DL and stick it in his file folder with the make/model/SN of the gun and the date he sold it to you. Anything more than that is really unnecessary. Besides, if he was the original purchaser (and the dealer he's using for the sale is not the one he bought it from), if you used the gun in a crime they would still come to him first and he'd still have to explain that it was sold through dealer X. The Feebs won't necessarially know that it was re-sold through a dealer.
