What constitutes "bound" in the bound book requirements of a Curio and Relic license? Would a 3 ring binder suffice or does it really have to be permanently bound in the sense of a regular hard back book?
Did you make your own or purchase it?
Thanks in advance for any light you can bring to this area.

It may be loose-leaf, and you may make your own. What will matter is that the pages have a sense of permanence to them. Number the pages. Make entries in ink. Make any corrections by crossing-out (not blotting-out), and initialing and dating the correction. Do not remove and replace pages. Think "anal-retentative accountant."

Someone with a better memory than me will hopefully post a link to some of the sites with the better print-your-own pages that can be used for making your own "bound" book (or you can create your own pages from scratch, if you've got the mind to). I've forgotten where I got mine from.

Bruce, That is the same one that I use and I keep it in a 3-prong folder.

I use a blank-page book I got from an office supply store. I'm using one page per item since I know I'll never fill the thing.

The reference material that come with your C&R show what fields are required in the records; I just write those in along the left side of the page. I'm glad that there are no federal handwriting legibility standards. ;-)

I've heard people use the 3 ring binder with no issues. I was told by the BATF investigator during my "interview" that the binder was not acceptable and it had to be a permanently bound book. Rather then chance it I went with a accounting log book from an office supply store.

From the ATF website:

(E1) What is a "bound book?" [Back]

A "bound book" is a permanently bound book or an orderly arrangement of loose-leaf pages which must be maintained on the business premises. The format must follow that prescribed in the regulations, and the pages must be numbered consecutively.

[27 CFR 478.121 and 478.125]

The brownells books, at $3, are a clear winner IMO. It would take quite a while to fill one up and it just removes all the questions.

That said: The BATFE is mainly concerned that the pages are numbered and kept together in such a way that removing or replacing a page will be fairly obvious. They want an accountant to be able to go through the listing and make sure the book balances and matches your inventory.

When I got my C&R FFL, I was not sure if loose leaf binders qualified or not. I solved any doubt by purchasing a .59 cents (or there abouts) student notebook. You know the ones with black and white mottled cover, with a space in which to place your name and grade.

Ditto. I also use a common composition ("marble") notebook. They're bound, cheap, and available at Walmart. The hard cover was a big thing for me.

Currently, it only has one entry. :(

But that entry is a Garand! :)

Is there anything saying you can't transfer entries from one bound book to another? In other words if you start with a note pad or something and want to shift to a larger/fancier book do they have a problem with you writing all the entries in again and destroying the first book? Or do you need to keep your first bound book and add a second?

In some other areas it's considered bad juju to transfer entries from one log/ledger to another and destroy the original.

If that's how the BATFE sees bound books then starting off on a $.97 walmart note pad might be kinda frustrating 10 years from now when it has disolved in its own acids.

If not, well, sounds like a good solution to me. :) At least until you are ordering other stuff from Brownells on your discount....

You can have multiple books. For instance, if you wanted to keep collections separate, like all Garands in one and everything else in another.
I've redone my book because I got better forms. As long as you transfer all the information there should be no problem.

Thanks, Guys.
I have made my own in EXCEL based on the one mentioned by BRUCE333. I would prefer to have it in a loose leaf format if that is permissible.

Could someone please provide a link to the book at Brownells? Their website is hard to use. Thanks! :)

Yes, that's it. Remember, its not only purchases you have to log. If you sell one of your C&Rs, even if you had it before you got your license, you must log it out. Transactions have to be logged within 24 hours, so it would be handy to have a book.

Gator's correct. Not to put too fine a point on it, if you sell a C&R that you owned before you got your C&R license, you should first log it into your book, and only then log it out. Nothing goes out of your book that didn't go into your book first.
