I was just browsing my local Cabela's today and found some Zastava M70s on the rack. The salesman said they just started carrying them. I'm not in the market for a new hunting rifle, so I didn't check the M70 thoroughly, but I did take one off the rack and give it the once-over -- it felt solid, and the action cycled smoothly. But what really caught my attention in the first place was the very nice walnut, with some good figure in it, and the $399 price tag -- much nicer wood than what you find on most entry-level rifles. It might be a good option for hunters who can't warm up to molded stocks.

I've had one of those with a mannlicher stock in 308 for a couple of years now. It's a lot of rifle for the money. Controlled feed, mauser action for $400. Action wasn't the smoothest when new but it gets better and better with use. Probably one of the best looking, inexpensive, rifles I've ever bought. One guy who wasn't familiar with it mistook it for something more exotic and actually have asked if I wanted to sell it. LOL

I love mine. It's a 308 with adjustable trigger. Very accurate

Greetings fellas . If I may add a couple of cents to the conversation . I bought 1 of these puppies awhile back . mine is plastic stocked . I must say it is a humdinger . it shoots well , good control . and looks meaner than cat poo poo . !!!!!! Lol ... .I like mine very much . I painted the stocks a deep forest green . it looks really nice . I'm redoing the buttstock cover and making a storage pocket inside the stock , and adding a pad . then I'll move on to my next mod . have a super and blessed evening ...✊✊✌✌

Cabela's starting carrying the Zastava Mini Mauser over a year ago. Did you see an M70 or a Mini Mauser? If M70 that would be nice.

Was that the Billings Cabela's by any chance?

I'd like to see photos of your rifle and modifications, if possible! :)

I bought the Zastava in 458 WM years ago in a wood stock. I refinished the stock, but the whole rifle is faithful claw extractor Mauser, I love it.

Cabela's at Short Pump had .30-06 and .270. Not bad fit and finish for the money from Serbia if you don't mind heaver rifle like old standard pre-64 Model 70.

Is M70 trigger guard/mag housing made of aluminum or steel? I believe Zastava M70 has a shorter action compares to M98 mausers, not sure if it is the Yugo M48 medium action or unique. Anyone know?

Sorry, but no. This was in Greenville, SC, and yes, they were the M70 Standard models, not the M85 mini-Mausers.

That's cool. I've never seen one in person except for a Remington 798 with an M70 barreled action. Seems like an economical way to get a CRF rifle to shoot or a CRF action to use on a semi-custom build.

Hmm, wonder if that's limited to just one part of the country at Cabela's. Just did a search at Cabela's for Zastava M70's and nothing came up.

If I can find one in a .243 I'd probably pick it up.

Browning, I worked the Cabela's Gun Counter part-time for two years. At the store where I worked we always had firearms that weren't listed on the website. Not a huge number of models but a few. There were also firearms on the website that had never been in the store so I guess there are probably regional differences in store inventory.

Mine is steel. The actions are almost identical to my WWII action on the Yugo Milsurp. The tooling is very close to K98 Mausers, the tooling was bought after WWII after the war from Oberndorf. The 7mm/8mm are 30/06 length. I don't know about shorter actions.

I check Boyd's website. They list Zastava M70 stocks with action screw spacing! I have a Zastava M70 in 308 already, but previous owner changed out the bottom metal, trigger assembly and stock.
Zastava M70 - Center to Center of Action Screws: 7.825"
M98 - Center to Center of Action Screws: 7 7/8" (i.e. 7.875")
Yugo M24/M48 - Center to Center of Action Screws: 7 5/8"

Awesome. Thanks.

I'll call them then.

Also sometimes classic firearms have them in stock . I'll leave a " ALERT " letting anyone now they have them and to jump on them like a frog on a fly ........

My only gripe with Zastava is their lack of wood finish. I bought a M99 22RF and I don't think that there was a drop of finish on it. It looked like they stained it, boxed it and shipped it. I finished it with Tru-oil and took the checkering tools out of the closet. Worked over the fake checkering and it looks much better now.

I would agree but could live with it at the price they sell for.
