The 45-70 is a wonderful cartridge, especially in the Marlin levergun.
In addition to the extensive list of cartridges put forth by Sam1911 check out these:
For .50 caliber sporting rifles, look at the .500 S&W and .50 Alaskan, in lever rifles. Both are handy and wonderfully powerful.
The .500 Jeffery, in bolt guns, CZ makes a reasonably affordable one in the 550 Safari line. This one is a real show stopper.
