Caliber rant!!!!

While a agree that we shouldn't tear apart another member's decision to have bought a particular rifle/cartridge combo, when someone poses the question, it righfully should be answered with the kind of discourse you seem to find distasteful.

How would we be helping a member who asks about cartridge X and we all say, "well, it's OK, pretty similar to A, B, F,G,H,Q and P. D, E, M and N are slower, I,K, W and Z are faster, but you're fine. Don't waste your time investigating the merits of the others, as they'll all kill your game animal. Dead is dead, right?"

Are there new, ballistically superior rounds to the venerable .308 out today, absolutely, 260 Rem for example. However, at the max range of 400 or 500 yards that I will ever shoot, closer to 400 in all likelihood, the .308 does a damn good job, is known for accuracy and is easy on the shoulder, in a 10lb tactical rifle like mine.:)

So bottome line, guys today like to poo-poo the .308 in favor of these new specialized cartridges, that's fine, I'll keep the venerable veteran, it gets the job done and does it well. So what if it has 10" more drop at 800 meters, big whoopteee do!:p

I often wonder where a lot of the people advocating the latest whiz bang cartridge get the money to shoot it.

So will a 30-06 loaded with the same bullet, be as accurate as a .308 at 800 meters? I know it will shoot flatter and get there faster, but will be as "accurate"?:)

What happened? I go eat dinner and this thread turned into a 308 vs everything thread???

Yikes! You guys have fun. I love the internet. At least I am now in a great mood to spend the evening with the family! Have fun guys. I will talk to you tomorrow!

All else being equal, yes. The slightly higher velocity will actually keep the .30-06 accurate slightly further out than the .308, since it will transcend the sonic barrier further downrange. .300 mag, farther. .300 Ultra, farther still.

my .02
honestly i see where he's coming from ive had way to many run ins with the fire and brimstone oughtsix owners to give me a bad tast of ar15.com thats why im here now.

personaly speaking though, for the real world

remington,winchester,ruger
270 308 30-06

cant go wrong with any of the three brands and you can knock on a door anywhere in the states and bum a box of ammo of any of the three in a pinch

still think the 270 has a more deader ability out at 600 yards

OH since I have your attention. I do have a problem that maybe you can help with.

Does anyone know where I can get the rear leaf sight screw that holds the leaf in the action on the big eared M1917 Enfield rifle? I broke mine while at the range Sunday.

There was a website that has microfiche style parts blow ups on it and the M1917 was included on there. Does anyone know what the website is? It seemed to have darn near every type and model rifle listed with these microfiche parts diagrams and parts to go with them. At least most of them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks and good night again.

I say'd it before, i'm sayin' it again: There still is absolutely no such thing as an inherently accurate cartridge...there are inherently accurate rifles, inherently accurate optics, inherently accurate riflemen, and even inherently accurate cartridge components (match bullets, good brass, consistent powder, consistent primers). The difference between two cases is negligible at best. It would take a Olympic-class benchrest rifleman with the best equipment available (or a testing rig) to tell any difference at all between two chamberings WRT accuracy (this includes pistol cartridges, small rifle cartridges, large rifle cartridges, slow cartridges, fast cartridges, big cartridges, small cartridges, fat cartridges, skinny cartridges, long cartridges, short cartridges, magnum cartridges, non-magnum cartridges, military cartridges, hunting cartridges, old straight walled cartridges, the newest whiz-bang-super cartridge, and even the dreaded belted magnum ).

Big Bill,

That's the beauty of being an American. No one had to die (recently) to make me the caliber cop. Our forefathers did that for me and called it freedom of speech!

mickey, that screw isn't metric, so most any gunsmith oughta have a "make-do" screw in his wild-animal box of spare stuff.

Is the broken-off part still in the hole? If so, removal can be a serious problem.

Your rant is well-taken, by the way. :) However, I gotta call it a lost cause, after being a moderator for right at eleven years, now, since the early TFL daze.

Thanks for the screw info. I will try and see if I can find one. I was able to get out the screw. The broke part is still screwed in the nut type of thing, but there is enough sticking out that I think I can grab it with needle nose pliers and twist it out. I'll let you know how that goes.

As far as your comment below:
However, I gotta call it a lost cause

I really didn't expect things to change because of this thread, but I was able to at least get it off my chest!

Thank you for your help.
