I am going to get a Savage 110 soon, probably an old used one. I want it for deer, and maybe the occasional elk, if I ever get another elk permit. Most used 110's are 30.06, 7mm, sometimes 270, and 300. I am leaning towards a 7mm or a 30.06, but have never shot either. Now, I know that it doesn't really matter much what caliber at 100 yards... but could I get some opinions on the 7mm vs the .06? Thanks

Meh, just pick one - both good choices. Whichever floats your boat - very similar. I tried to like the 7mm Rem mag, and it's a great caliber, but it just "didn't take" with me - sold both of the two I had. Still have a .30-06 and a .270.

On hardcore ballistics,the 7 would have a slight trajectory/power edge.Real world,get either,nothing you'll hit will know any different.

.270 130gr bullet 8.25lb rifle 11 ft/lbs of recoil

30/06 165gr bullet 8.25lb. rifle 17.5 ft/lbs of recoil

7mag 154gr bullet 8.25lb rifle 21.5 ft/lbs of recoil

Any of them will kill an Elk. How hard do you want it to hit you ?
