Caliber Wars in revolvers?!

Wheelgunners...that's jsut the way we roll.

BTW TexasBill...Colts *did* rotate the right way!

;-)

The point of revolvers having low capacity is no longer valid IMO. 8 rounds of .357 Magnum and quick reloads using moon clips will solve most problems any one of us will come up against, IMO of course...

Moon clips have some disadvantages, namely, the rings going out of true. Actually, I've read that, but don't have any experience using them. A standard HKS reloader as shown here is easy to use and you can master it quickly.

Agreed on .38/.357 being the standard. For CCW, .38 is as low as I want to go.

Revolvers never had the significant capacity differences

Oh, yeah?

I have two of each in my handgun collection.

.22LR & 9mm in autos (I also just sold a .45)
.38/.357 & .500 in revolver.

I feel that just like anything else, everything has it's place in the world. my .22 is for fun and I just liked the capacity of the auto and I put a red dot on it for fun. My .500 is for fun but also (one of these days) for hunting hogs.

My .38/.357 is for home defense (and fun of course) so I have a choice of a "mild" .38spl, "intermediate" 38+P or "power" .357mag. My 9mm is for fun, inexpensive shooting and also some for home defense. I also put a tactical light on it to aid in the HD.

As for "discussions", the only ones I've really seen on this section is the "big game" hunting threads and the choice in caliber. Should I get a 454, a 500, a 460, a 44 mag, is 357 enough.... But again, it's much more relaxed then the "discussions" on the other forum. :D

Man im glad i started this thread its nice to see some opinions on the subject and learn what you guys think

im by no means bashing autos i agree with the above post and love both it just so happens that my vast fortune (read pennyless pockets) has only brought me revolvers to begin with

i only own two autos that were hand me downs (a raven p25 and a reck p8 both in .25ACP)

ive always had a fondness for wheelguns tho so my first handgun was a Ruger Vaquero in .357Magnum

then when i got a job i didnt feel safe doing (pizza delivery in a bad part of town) i got my CCDW and a new wheelgun my Ruger LCR in .38Sp+P

i also wanted a novelty/range toy so i ended up with a 3inch magnum judge

i cant help but think of future guns and it seems that most of them are wheelies
i dream of a Ruger GP100 with a 4-6 inch barrel
a S&W 686 with bobbed hammer DAO set up for carry
my previously mentioned pair of Ruger Redhawks
a taurus 450 (i wish someone else would make a .45LC snub)
and a "fitz"
and a S&W63 for plinking

dont get me wrong there are autos on "the list" too just not as many
1911 (thats the first i want)
M9 or glock17
somekind of 22 havnt decided

oh and one day id like to own the "big boys" on both fronts a Desert Eagle .50 and a S&W 500 but just to say i own them lol

There's a very simple reason for all this agreement -- the hands-down choice for self-defense in revolvers is the .357 Magnum. In snubbies, where the .357 is downright painful to practice with, the alternative is the .38 Special.

In big game revolvers, there really isn't all that much difference between the .45 Colt (Ruger Only loads) and the .44 Magnum. More powerful cartridges exist, but they really aren't for Joe Average.

Actually...for SD, I like the .44 Special.

The wife has a .357...but she a little thing.

Well, Vern, there are thumper guys, always looking for the .45 Colt snubby. But, yeah, if they were that popular, all those .45 snubs and .44 special snubs that have come and gone would still be around.

Me, I'm perfectly happy with the .38 Special and .357 magnum for self defense. They've been probably my favorite CF calibers for handguns for since I bought my first CF handgun in the 70s. I have owned and do own autos. 9mm and .45 ACP, much as I like 'em, haven't changed that. Of course, I REALLY love the .22, but not for self defense. :D

Haha, it would've helped if you could get a box or two of ammo for a week's wages.:)

Me, I'm perfectly happy with the .38 Special and .357 magnum for self defense.

I like them a lot too, they do set the standard, but I've been converted to .44 special over the last year. More smack, less snap and flash than the .357.

Fireside...I could tell right away that you were a man of distinction!

I don't know i like to have a few choices but for the one i seem to go back too is the 357
just seems to do it for me, great cal IMO powerful enough for most jobs and a blast to shoot.

Nice thread. It also seems that people here actually listen to a posters personal criteria and answer in accordance. On the Auto side they seem take a persons personal preference and throw it out the window.

I.E. ?? I'm looking for something in a .380 with a minimum 10rnd capacity under $500.??

Answer: NO GET A BLAHBRAND .45ACP IT ONLY HOLDS 8 BUT HITS WAY HARDER AND THATS WORTH TH $700 PRICE TAG.

That could be an answer. But you can pretty much guarantee that within the first 5 posts you'll see the standard answer of not just the auto forum, but of just about any forum that is gun related...

"Get a Glock" ;)

Doesn't matter the question. It could be "Best O/U 12 gauge for waterfowl?" or "Which reloading press should I get?" :p

Maybe it's because there are so many great .38sp revolvers with a proven record that few are inspired to argue that they are "inadequate". Anything bigger, no reason to argue. Anything smaller, few argue that they are "really swell" SD guns. There's not so clear general agreement in what's an "adequate" SD auto caliber.

Just a guess...
