I just got a new old Colt SA in 38spc, sn 977xx I know it`s a Black Powder frame so it`s been reberraled to the 38spc but I`m not sure how old it is?
Any info would be great, thx, jon.

Colt Single Action number 977xx was made in 1883.
The numbers that year started at 85000, and ended at 101999.

The .38 Special wasn't offered in the Single Action until 1930.

If you want to spend about $100.00, you can buy a Colt Historical Letter.
This is a document-quality letter that will list everything Colt knows about that particular gun.
This info would include:
Original caliber.
Original finish.
Barrel length.
When it was shipped.
WHO it was shipped to.
How many other guns were in that shipment.
And any custom or non-standard options.

Value range if it was all original could go from 1k to numbers that would make your head hurt.

Since it isn't, more information is needed. Pictures would be great. Is it a factory barrel? If so, how old? Did the factory do it or a gunsmith in a shop? What length is the barrell? What kind of grips? How much finish left? Any engraving? What markings are on the frame, barrel, under the grips, on the back of the grips, etc.?

IMHO, worth spending the money to get it lettered. You might be able to find a period correct barrel and get it back to its original configuration. Maybe it started out life as a 38 WCF and that's why it got a 38 spl bbl later in life.
