Can anyone identify this bayonet?

My father in-law has a few swords and bayonets from the Spanish American war (or so he believes). Can anyone identify the bayonet in the below photo and say what rifle it was issued to and the approximate era (to determine what wars it may have seen service in)? If it helps any, several of his other swords have already been identified as having been presented to a distant relative in 1895.

Looks like a M1866 French Chassepot bayonet.

The Spanish used a straight Mauser bayonet and the American used a variety of shorter straight bayonets for the Krag (except for the Krag "bowie" bayonet).

Thanks hso!

I just had this also answered at another forum with the same conclusion as yours. The inscription on the spine (?) of the blade confirms your suspicion.

I have a few other swords he would love to be identified as well. I'll open another thread to see if anyone here can identify those as well.

Thanks again, you know your stuff!
