Found a powder horn my dad had he used with his BP rifles. Its dupont 2F

Still seems to burn ok but i wanted to try it

Ive been shooting 30 grans of 3F pyrodex and 25 Tripple 7

Would i be ok with this 2F dupont using the same loads since its 2F?

There is some 3F dupont somewhere but i havnt been able to find it, my dad use to stick stuff all over the place

This is what it looks like compared to what ive been using

Good Question

I don't have the answer but want to know how it works. I would think it should work ok but not sure what adjustments need to be made.

You did not mention what gun, what caliber, what bullet, what expectations you have.
A 30 grain volumetric load of real black powder would shoot about like the same volume of the fakes.

You can use 2F OK in a gun in which you were using 3F. If you use the same grainweight of 2F you will achieve a slightly slower velocity with lower pressure than your 3F. Accuracy may be affected but you will still be safe.

If it's a cap & ball revolver, it will work but 3F would be better. If it's a rifle use it until it runs out. Pyrodex goes bad; real black powder never does.

I have some pryodex in RF from my hunting days. Can I use this in the revolvers.

They are the clones like most of the others we have now.

Most are pietta copys.

The pyrodex ive been using is old from the 90s and it doesnt seem like its lost any of its pop at all. When i compare it to the new pellets it seems to smoke just as much and the recoil is the same.

He kept everything in a cool dry place though sealed so i had no doubts that it would work.

.50 caliber and above are generally considered 2f powder guns. 3f is finer and faster and higher pressure so you should always be safer going DOWN the number scale of powders. 1f won't even fully burn in a carbine -- I know 'cause I've pelted people with stuff downrange with blanks that included that size ("Reenactor" powder).

I liked it, that stuff i think smells better and it didnt have near as much smoke as this new stuff im using now.

It was however VERY mild, nothing like the pop from the tripple 7 at all.

I might try it again using just the powder and the ball with a level scoop of 30 grains.

3f vs. 2f

I use 3f for everything, even my 20 gauge fowler. I use a little less in the larger bores. Burns cleaner, quicker. 30 grains is more than you need in a cap & ball. I use 22g with a wad and a .454 ball, and get spot on 2" groups at 25 yards with my Uberti "Remington". I don't ever use the fake stuff. No special reason, don't need to. Can't use it it some matches, like N-SSA or primitive rendezvous shoots, anyway. My experience with conicals in a percussion revolver is that they aren't as accurate as a ball.
