does anybody know anything about this rifle?

GERMAN TARGET RIFLE: .22lr,Full-size single-shot bolt action marked "BERNH.PAATZ.WAFFENFABRIK ZELLA-MEHLIS/THUR." Continental sporting sights and swivels, repaired stock with cheek piece and checkered pistol grip. Needs extractor. Shoots one-hole groups @ 10m.

Zella-Mehlis/Thur. Means the towns of Zella-Mehlis in Thuringia, which is in the heart of the German arms making region. IE this is GOOD steel. There are a number of small makers between WW1 and 2 as well as Walther. what you have is a, Bernhard Paatz 22 cal rifle. Thing is with a missing part, and a stock repair you're going to be hard pressed to sell it for more than you're asking (found your ad doing research).

Walther made similar rifles and honestly might have outsourced to a maker like Paatz at some point, but I have found no direct evidence they did.

Bernhard Paatz was a gunsmith located in Zella-Mehlis (just north of Suhl, Germany) from 1932-1939; he seems to have specialized in .22 target rifles, but there isn't a whole lot of information on him, because most of his work ended up in the Russian occupation zone. "Waffenfabrik" is just the German way of saying "weapons factory", so EACH manufacturer would have had their own waffenfabrik.

Oh well, thanks SDC, that makes sense. It sounds like a pretty neat rifle from talking to the guy, but has a broken extractor, funny, don't think I'll be finding parts for it.

Dr. Rob, actually I'm the buyer, and I like fixing gun, and those I can't fix end up in the BUBBA pile of highly customized rifles. Think I'll stick to restoring this one

Depending on the design, making/finding an extractor might be easy or very difficult. If I were interested, I would ask the seller to send a couple of good pictures of the stock repair and the bolt/breechblock where the extractor is missing or broken.

Jim

Oh ok, well I have an idea what you paid for it then. I have a friend with an ERMA 22 single shot made postwar, that's a hell of a tackdriver.

Thing is if you post pics SOME OF THE PARTS might be swappable avaialble from another model etc.

mesinge2 , I have a matching rifle to the "German Target Rifle" It's stamped "FLZ" on the bolt with no other markings . It's the gun I learned to shoot with about 1950 and still use it as it's VERY accurate with a 1 lb trigger [I was really spoiled as a kid !]

In the late thirties many gun makers made similar guns , some single shot, some repeating type. I have a Mauser which is very accurate ,a well made single shot .If the gun is in good shape with good bore it would be worth getting.
