Forgive me if I posted in the wrong area, but I'm trying to decide on a decent pack to bring with me on camping/hunting trips. I think I'll go with something by Maxpedition. I have looked at some of their gearslings and backpacks. I really like the idea behind a gearsling to keep things simple and small, but whenever I go deer hunting I'm afraid I'll need something bigger like a backpack to fit warmer clothes in.

I will also probably keep your basic survival tools like a medkit, fixed blade, firestarters, etc. Keep most of that stuff in the outside pouches and pack the main compartment with clothes for the specific hunting/camping trip I'm going on. Anyone have suggestions for me? I'm getting tired of randomly throwing a bunch of stuff in a duffel at the last minute and forgetting things.

...would like to know what you choose. We are planning a pack-in elk hunt this fall, and a party of three will be going in on foot, (at least the plan for now, subject to change, if horses become avaialble ).

I use a normal camo backpack, like what what i used in college to carry books, now it carries couple bottles of water, food/snacks, extra ammo, compass, digital camera, and extra stuff on day trips when hunting.

I plan on upgrading it near future: Check out the 24 hr campfir forum, they have a whole section on backpack hunting. link is here:

other neat camping threads there too.

Thanks for the link, Cob! I will definitely check out those forums. I'm really looking Into the falcon 2 right now. This will be fore mostly 2-3 day camping/hunting trips with friends. I'm sure I could get buy on the gearslingers but I want more room for warm clothes. It gets pretty cold here in illinois. I also like how I can strap a small blanket or tarp to the bottom of the backpacks. The gearslingers don't have this feature.

For daypack purposes I use either a camelback striker or a slingshot pack by horn hunter. The sling shot is a great bowhunting pack tons of room. It also makes for a nice rifle hunting pack since it rides over on shoulder only leaving my right arm open for shooting. No straps to get in the way. For longer treks I have a pack I bought in Germany while I was stationed there. Could not even tell you the brand I just no it works and has held up for years.

Also, check the cheaper than dirt website.. I was browsing thru the surplus military packs, noticed quite a selection of surplus from Poland, Russia, US, and several other countries, not to mention their regular line.

They had surplus A.L.I.C.E. frame packs for less than $50, and surplus A.L.I.C.E. (non-frame) packs for $25. saw some (maybe) good deals there
